Being in the right frame of mind is the key to success–more than the actual “diet.”
If you have tried diets and programs in the past and did not experience (lasting) success with achieving that healthy lifestyle (and/or weight loss), then these tips are for you. They’ll help you kickstart your healthy lifestyle and help support you on your journey to (continued) health in a successful, sustainable, positive, and practical way.
- Identify your why. Think about why you want to adopt healthy behaviors. Even if you have your eye on weight loss, try to focus on additional benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Your “why” helps keep you motivated and focused, while also keeping the big picture in mind.
- Increase your awareness. Often, we are so busy and distracted that we are not even aware of the foods that we eat throughout the day. Our meals might be wholesome, but there’s the “mindless” eating in between that derails us. Depending on your personality, circumstances, and goals, I suggest keeping a food journal which will help you be more mindful and aware of your hunger cues and food choices, among many other benefits.
- Focus on what to include instead of what to avoid. Unfortunately, it is common for people to be so focused on foods to avoid and restrict. - Be practical and realistic. You know yourself and your schedule best. Set goals and adopt healthy behaviors that can be implemented successfully and realistically with long-term success in mind.
