My visit to The Nuttery was an incredible, delicious experience…just walk in and inhale for yourself! And a gift from The Nuttery for mishloach manos or your hostess is something they’ll savor and enjoy.
I’ve passed by The Nuttery in Lakewood’s Gourmet Glatt Plaza plenty of times, but whatever I’ve seen through the glass windows, or whatever I’ve heard about the heavenly nuts and sweets…or even whatever I’ve seen on their website…none of it compares to the experience of stepping inside and being greeted by the aromas of freshly roasted nuts.
All of The Nuttery’s nuts, whether sweet, savory, or spicy, are roasted fresh and flavored in-house, with the open kitchen situated right in the center, so the smell fills the entire store.
Barry leads me into the kitchen so I can see how it all happens. We pass the coffee and milkshake bar
(did you know you can gift a ‘Nuttery Milkshake’ gift card so your recipient can come in and enjoy the drink of their choice as a treat?) and head inside the glass-walled kitchen, where the popcorn is popping near the entrance.
“This popcorn is one of a kind, it’s a very special recipe. People come in all the time just to get a bag or a bucket of popcorn,” Barry tells me.
All the raw nuts are lined up in bins on the shelves. The kitchen is temperature controlled so they remain at their ideal temperature. Inside the kitchen are all sorts of sleek, shiny chrome nut machines, each with their own task.
“This machine machines the watermelon seeds…this is the sweet mixer that mixes the sweet nuts with all their ingredients…this is a chestnut roasting machine. In the winter on Fridays, we have fresh roasted chestnuts. The season is over in another couple weeks.”
“Those are the best and they’re so tough to make at home!”
I’m going to have to get here on a Friday soon.
Barry shows me the roasting machine, and another machine which mixes the savory nuts with their flavorings.
There’s a chocolate dipping station for anything that’s chocolate-coated. The Nuttery’s famous chocolates, including those signature logs and pops, are created fresh in the Brooklyn location.
About those chocolates.
The Nuttery carries both their signature handmade chocolate confections and a huge selection of the famous Miami Beach chocolates, produced under their hechsher. The chocolate counter wraps around half the store and the selection is huge.
But, of course, when it’s my turn to taste I choose from the dairy section. I have a white chocolate mocha cheesecake pop…amazing (what could be better?)…but then I also take home an incredible chocolate bar with halva and caramel inside and a white chocolate bar on top. I save that for the next day. And it’s probably the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted. Ever.
Whoever receives these as a gift will definitely love their recipient.
About those gifts. Yes, The Nuttery has plenty of prepackaged hostess gifts and mishloach manos that include different assortments of their famous nuts and chocolates. They line the wooden shelves on the entire left side of the store, each package is beautiful with a fresh, tempting assortment of treats. There’s also complete desserts you can gift, from tarts in acrylic containers…to cinnamon bun towers.
But what’s so cool about The Nuttery is that you can totally be creative and put together your own package of your own favorites. There are packaging stations throughout the store. You can play around, choose your own containers, whether it’s a wooden crate, plastic sectional, or acrylic cubes. Then, add the chocolate and nuts that you know each person would love. It all gets either ribboned, shrink-wrapped, or inserted into a paper sleeve, so the look is distinctly Nuttery.
Want to stop for lunch while creating your mishloach manos? There’s tables and chairs to sit and relax, so you can enjoy a coffee, milkshake, or Fork & Bowl salad while watching nuts being mixed and roasted in the kitchen.
The end of my tour takes me back to the front of the store, where I first passed the huge assortment of nuts and dried fruits….from the almonds in every flavor (like cinnamon, toffee, or smoked), a variety of pistachios (BBQ, Turkish, Salt and Pepper, Onion Garlic, Jalapeno, and more)…and famous Bar Miz and BBQ Kumsitz Mix (some very special and tasty assortments)…and much more, all kept fresh in their heated tables.
The Nuttery isn’t like any candy store. Where else is everything feel-food fresh? It’s a treat to walk in and sample anything you’re in the mood for…and it’s a huge treat to receive a gift from The Nuttery too.
Now, when you look at these photos of mishloach manos…I know it’s really hard, but also try to imagine the sweet aroma of sweet and salty nuts and fresh, creamy chocolate. And yes, you can order online and gift these to someone who will really appreciate it. Or, you can go into the store and enjoy The Nuttery experience yourself.
