Just a sprinkle of cayenne pepper is known to keep the critters away.
While extra hot cayenne pepper might be intended for those who like their food extra spicy (still, even if you like spice, you won’t need this quantity unless you’re operating a restaurant with a spicy menu!), it has another use that might make it come in handy for any one of us.
If you’ve ever had animals go through your garbages (especially in the summertime), then you know that it’s a big nuisance and mess. Even when your garbage is not overfilled, they find a way to drill that hole and get in! A sprinkle of extreme hot cayenne pepper is known to work wonders! Animals hate the smell and they stay away.
Read the review on these products: extra hot and extreme hot cayenne to learn about all the ways people have used the pepper to deter animals. It’s not only relevant for keeping your garbage neat. If you have animals who are eating up your garden or flowers, it could also be useful. Plus–cayenne pepper is not a chemical, it’s a natural solution, so it’s safer to have this on your lawn vs. other solutions (as long as no one is eating the flowers!).

do you know if this would help for pigeons?
Esti says
I don’t think birds mind the cayenne pepper, so it might not help keep them away.

be careful when using it it’s hot for humans too. wear gloves and make sure it doesn’t come in contact with your skin or eyes. speaking from experience.

The Mint-X garbage bags from Costco are meant to do the same… apparently the animals don’t like the smell of the mint so they don’t touch them
Rivky says
Would this work for a family of groundhogs that live under my deck? Any suggestions for that?
AS says
Rivky, just wanted to share that you may not want to “evict” your groundhogs. We tried that, and the next “tenant” that took the spot was a skunk, which was much more unpleasant and more difficult to “evict”. We have now made peace with our groundhogs which are annoying but not terrible.
