After working with children for so many years, Passaic-based family therapist Shifi Lieberman LMFT, realized a trend: a lot of parents are running to bring their children for therapy, when they don’t necessarily need it.
Rather, they simply needed awareness and understanding about how our emotions work. Sure, they might have been helped by the therapy, but there should be easier, less time-consuming, and less costly ways to learn what they needed to know.
She also realized that there are also parents who don’t reach out for help when they need it because they are hesitant to begin therapy, but they really don’t know where to turn to get what they do need.
She developed ‘Social Skills Made Simple’ first, and we were so impressed at how much we learned. It enlightened and surprised us about what we don’t know about our children! And we were so happy to learn! It’s beneficial for everyone, even those who aren’t having a specific issue.
But what kind of issues is it particularly helpful for? Parents of children who struggle with intense emotions, who get frustrated easily, or need help developing confidence or communication skills… they’ll all benefit. Click here to learn more and sign up! New research all points to Social Emotional Language as the key to a successful future. This course gives you the keys to raising healthy, happy, and successful children. Give yourself, your marriage, and your children the tools you all will benefit from!
Shifi created ‘Anxiety Made Simple’ next, where she describes healthy anxiety and when it turns into unhealthy anxiety. Shifi breaks down what you need to know about anxiety and how you can help yourself and your children manage the emotion of anxiety. This course is clear, understandable and solution-oriented, giving you the tools you need to best help your child manage his/her anxiety.
Shifi gives the information over in a clear, simple way that empowers you, the parent, to better understand and empathize with your child and then practical tools you can use to help them. Learn more information and sign up for ‘Anxiety Made Simple’ here!

While I understand the goal of this post is to offer another suggestion for help for kids. I have a hard time with the headline and beginning of the article that claims to stop running to therapy.
For decades therapy has been stigmatized and under utilized and only in the last few years has the world and frum community begun to open up to it and make it a more accepted strategy for self improvement. I hope this headline does not discourage anyone looking to see a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist who may really need the help or feed into the stigma that therapy isn’t necessary.
I’m sure this referral is wonderful and she would be a helpful alternative but so much so to promote her at the cost of potentially deterring others from getting help they may need?
Shifi Lieberman, LMFT says
Dear anonymous,
You are absolutely correct and make a very valid point. BCP changed the title – kudos for your feedback! I’m so happy you posted so this can be clarified. When a child needs therapy, therapy can be extremely therapeutic. And very effective. And there are many amazing warm, child therapists out there. So you are correct – that has to be said.
What I’ve seen from working with children in private practice and in Yeshiva Ktana of Passaic for many years, is that very often parents can do amazing therapeutic work and help their children once they develop the skills and the know-how. I always prefer we try that route first. If it doesn’t work after lots of learning and trying to understand them, bringing a child to therapy is certainly in order.
There are many reasons to bring children in for therapy. Use your intuition when to call or speak this out with your child’s school or a trusted referral agency. They will guide you. This course is designed for every parent, but especially for people who’s child has emotion regulation and social skills deficits.
Learning how to create a strong, healthy, (“securely attached” as we therapists call it!) relationship with your child will give them a gift for life. (It sounds corny but I really believe it! )You will model for them how to create healthy relationships, and they will naturally transfer that security and confidence to their peers, marriages and how to be a healthy parent themselves. This course reviews how to develop greater empathy, how to identify and communicate each and every emotion (so many children only recognize happy, mad and sad), how to manage intense emotions, all about anger and what is means (hint: anger is a secondary emotion, an emotion typically driven by another emotion!), how to calm oneself down from an intense emotion, understanding triggers, how to problem solve effectively with our “problem solving sheets” that families use and love, all about attachment theory and other secrets to raising a successfully happy child with healthy social skills.
This course is designed for every parent. It’s knowledge and skills that every parent should have. Because we all have emotions that need to be managed! The more in touch with our emotions, the greater capacity for empathy, and the better social skills we have. Whether or not your child has any social skills challenges, but certainly if they do, this course can help.

Is this a course for young children to watch or for their parents?

Wondering the same
Shifi Lieberman, LMFT says
Great questions! It was originally recorded with the intent that the parents watch it and teach these skills to their children. However, more and more people have been watching the videos with their children and teens… you know your child best but I’d say starting about age 11-12 would benefit from watching with you! I’d suggest you watch it first though just to be sure it’s appropriate for them. Feel free to ask any other questions! Best way is to email me directly @ shifiliebermanLMFT@gmail.com
Happy Course watching!

What’s the time commitment for this course? I understand I can start and stop but how many hours of listening/homework is it all together?
