Right now, as we speak, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of The Kichels Collection 5 to my doorstep. The tracking information says that it’s supposed to arrive within the next couple of hours. In my house, like in many of yours, the arrival of a fresh, new Kichels, full of new laughs and feelings of “That doesn’t only happen in my house?” is a highly anticipated event.
When I get home, there was a box from Feldheim at my door. And, there it was, peeking through the packing paper: my fresh, new Kichels. I don’t see the column from week to week, so when a new Collection arrives, it’s an extra exciting event.

That night, when I finally sat down with the Kichels and my tea, one of my little daughters asked me, “Ma, is this your favorite moment of the year?”
It’s certainly up there.
I used to have to hide to read The Kichels. By now, though, the kids know the rules. No one gets to touch the Kichels before Mom does. There’s no more fights. No more hiding in the bedroom with the door locked to read in peace. That son who barricaded the door so that no one can take The Kichels away from him when his turn was up? He’s now tucked away in Bais Medrash. He’ll have to wait for the off Shabbos to get his hands on it.
When I laugh, they ask, “What was that one about?” “Ma, can you tell us what was funny?”
And the moment, I put The Kichels down, someone is there to pick it up. It has an ongoing presence on the arm of the cozy chairs in my family room.
The Kichels makes us feel good. It makes us all feel a little bit more normal. A little bit like, “We’re in this together.” and “Yes, we feel that too.”
The Kichels gets us like no one else does. One of my favorite parts in this edition of The Kichels (besides for the comics) are the “behind the scenes” explanations with the backstories of some favorite comics.
