Traveling to Miami This Winter? You’ve Got to Visit the Keys

The Florida keys may seem distant and exotic, but Key Largo is less than two hours from Miami. Get off of Collins and get to those coral reefs!

Do you want a South Florida day to remember? Tired of restaurant hopping morning, noon, and night? Head down to the Keys for the day. Here’s the itinerary of one day I spent in South Florida.

7:00 a.m. Shacharis at Young Israel, Boca

8:00 a.m. Breakfast at Boca Bagels.

8:15 a.m. Depart for Key Largo.

10: 15 a.m. Arrive at John Pennenkamp Coral Reef State Park for snorkeling among the coral reefs. Snorkeling tours are offered throughout the day or you can charter a personal snorkeling boat (with up to six passengers). Don’t want to get wet? You can see the coral reefs on a glass-bottom boat tour instead.

1:15 p.m. Lunch by the waterfront (from the bagel store). Stop into some shops along Overseas Highway.

2:00 p.m. Head a few more miles west and rent a bike from Key Largo Bike. From there, it’s less than a 30-minute bike ride along the Florida Overseas Heritage Trail to Windley Key on Isla Morada. It’s a breathtaking bike ride, with exotic scenery and water surrounding you.

2: 45 p.m. Once you reach Windley Key, you can explore the Fossil Reef Geological State Park.

5:00 p.m. Head back to Key Largo while watching the sunset (at 5:30 p.m. this time of year) as you ride along the Straits of Florida.

7:30 p.m. Get back to Miami just in time for dinner!

10:00 p.m. Ma’ariv in North Miami Beach

You can take the glass-bottom boat which is a more family-friendly option.

    A couple of points-
Fossil reef state park is only open Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday).
Heritage trail is mostly on the highway so not suitable for young children.
