19 Great Activity Books That’ll Keep Your Creative Kids Entertained

No need to rush anywhere. Pull out a fresh activity book and the kids will be busy.

UPDATED FOR 2024. Midwinter break is almost here, and although we hope to enjoy some out-of-the-house fun, there’s always those times when mom needs the kids to be happy and entertained at home (think: Erev Shabbos…or when mom needs to get some work done…or simply cook supper!). These activity books will give you that hour or two (or 10 minutes!) that you need. They’re also a great incentive to finish homework (homework is done, the fun books come out), or bring them out on a cold rainy Sunday afternoon when you want a fun and fresh activity. You can see how we made an Activity Book Center in this post.

Younger children can keep busy with simple paper and crayons. But they’ll be even more thrilled (and stay busier for longer) with some new special activities.

Ages 5-7

Totally Awesome Mazes and Puzzles

The #1 children’s maze and puzzle book.

Ages 4-6

Dot-to-Dot Books

This dot-to-dot is a really fun introduction to drawing. Connect the dots and then color. Perfect for ages 4-5.

Ages 1-3

Numbers and Letters Coloring

This coloring book for toddlers is educational too. It’s a perfect “first” coloring book. It’s great for younger children since the pictures are big and coloring in the lines is easy.

Age 3-7

Melissa & Doug Water Wow Activity Books

When crayons don’t hold interest anymore, there’s paint. That’s mess-free paint. These Water Wow Activity Books are fun and kids absolutely love them. Crayola also makes mess-free coloring pages--the Color Wonder markers only work on this paper.

Age 3-7

Dot Markers

If a bit of mess is okay, these dot markers and coloring sheets will make an artist out of kids of all ages. A great activity even the older kids will love.  Want the stay-clean version? Try this Dot Sticker activity!

Age 6-7

Paint by Sticker

Kids love love love painting by sticker. There’s lots of different Paint by Sticker and Sticker by Number books that have different levels of difficulty. This is one of the easier ones.

Age 8-12

Paint By Sticker

This is a more advanced version of Paint by Sticker.

Ages 8-11

Sticker by Number

This sticker book has beautiful pictures and was really enjoyable to complete! We really liked the Silly Snacks version for ages 6-7.

Ages 3-7

Make a Face Sticker Activity Books

Creative fun with reusable stickers.

Ages 6-11

My First Origami Kit

Lots of folding fun.

Hidden picture books are a great activity. They’re also a great one for bedtime for kids who can’t read yet (or those who can!)

Ages 8-12

Perfectly Logical

Big kids are big fans of this one!

All Ages

Kawaii Coloring Books

If you’re looking for simply cute coloring books with no characters, Kawaii books are usually a good pick. Some have more interesting themes, but most of them simply have cute images and typically do not have non-Jewish or non-tznius types of pictures. This is one that our kids enjoyed coloring. See other kawaii books here.

The Everything Kids Word Search

A Word Search is a great way to keep the brain muscles moving over vacation.

Age 8-12

I recently got a color by number book that kept my kids busy for hours. It’s these tiny little squares so you only see the picture once it’s completed. It was a lot of fun!

We just ordered the first one listed, Ultimate Puzzle Challenge and my 8 year old daughter absolutely loves it! The activities are different, creative, not boring and the perfect balance of challenge but not too difficult. Kept her busy for hours so far. It’s so hard to tell online if a workbook will be good so thanks so much for the recommendation! Another BCP win 🙂
