Ohel is the Jewish community’s hub for mental health services. Read about their new Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) groups below.
Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services is the umbrella organization providing mental health services and supports to the Jewish community. From their work in the recent bereavement space, pregnancy and postpartum support, and so much more, they look at the Jewish community and see which unmet needs they can fulfill.
Their newest project? DBT Groups for women and teenage girls. What is DBT? It’s a treatment designed to help anyone who has intense emotions they want to regulate, unwanted behavior, or who wants to improve their relationships. Let’s take a peek at these groups!

‘The DBT Skills Groups are designed to help women of all ages learn practical skills for dealing with life’s ups and downs,’ explains Shira Natanov, LMHC, Director of Ohel’s DBT Program. ‘In these groups, you’ll learn practical skills to make a difference in your life.’
- Emotional Regulation – These are the skills that help us be able to experience and respond to intense emotions in a healthy way, where we feel in control, instead of feeling controlled by them. With emotional regulation, you’ll learn to handle even the more overwhelming emotions like anger, anxiety, shame, and more.
- Distress Tolerance – Learn how to survive a problem you can’t fix. This is the ‘How do I get through this wildly distressing moment without making it worse? How can I stay calm when the pressure is so high, or not give in when I feel this destructive urge?
- Mindfulness – Mindfulness isn’t ‘Ladidah, I’m so zen,’ it’s how you stay present in the moment that you’re in. You’re focused, calm, and grounded in the here and now. You know what’s going on inside of you and outside of you, so you can make the best choices.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness – Looking to improve your relationships? That’s interpersonal effectiveness: how to ask for what you need, how to say no, how to make new friends: your guide for more meaningful relationships.
Ohel’s DBT Groups (up to 8 women) are structured as interactive classes: educational, with space for each woman to participate. You’ll walk away with real tools to make lasting changes in your life.
Ohel wants DBT Groups to be accessible to every woman! These weekly groups are often fully covered by insurance, or Ohel offers very low, super-affordable rates. Groups are either in person in Brooklyn or take place virtually (for New York residents only).
And yes, Ohel offers individual therapy and several other group therapies. Learn more about Ohel’s DBT Groups and other services, and sign up here.
