Açaí: A Trend That is Here to Stay

Learn how to prepare a gorgeous açaí board yourself. It’s the perfect thing to send on any occasion.

Yes, we have seen the boards. They are popular and practically everywhere. But, that said, we can also agree that at any family gathering it’s the açaí board that gets finished first.

Refreshing, delicious, customizable and…kinda, healthy too.

All you need is a nice label and you’re ready to go. We designed these Purim labels to make it easy for you to customize and print!

So, if you are looking to bring something special to your host this Purim, or looking to prep and freeze a dessert in advance, here is a recipe we love–and all the steps involved in making that perfect açaí board.

We used this board because it’s not so expensive (think gifting), comes with a cover and looks really pretty once done.

You can also present it in a more traditional platter like this one here and your host will be left with a functional tray once done.

Start by placing all the ingredients in a food processor or blender.

If using a blender like the Vitamix, place the almond milk first. The liquids help get things moving.

It might take a while and you might need to help it along a bit by stopping and mixing.

Once smooth, it’s time to pour the açaí onto the board.

Spread evenly and freeze.

You want to wait until the açaí is firm before placing the toppings. That will ensure the fruit won’t sink into it.

Place the toppings in neat rows and return to the freezer until ready to serve.

The açaí will need about an hour to thaw before it’s scoopable.

Don’t forget the best part. The warm almond butter for drizzling!

We added a tablespoon or two of oil to thin it so that it drizzles nicely. Warming the butter up in the microwave will also ensure it drizzles easily.

Complete the look by placing the almond butter in a squirt bottle for easy, neat drizzling.

Açaí Board

Ingredients

For the açaí:

  • 2 cups almond or oat milk
  • 2 3.5 oz Açaí packets (we used unsweetened Sambazon brand)
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 2-3 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 lb bag frozen strawberries

Choose Your Favorite Toppings (all of these will freeze well):

  • shredded coconut
  • granola
  • mini chocolate chips
  • mango, diced small
  • pineapple, diced small
  • kiwi, diced small
  • blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • sliced strawberries, fresh or frozen
  • pomegranate seeds

For drizzling:

  • almond butter

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender. If using a blender like the Vitamix, place the almond milk first, this will help with the blending process.
  • Blend all the ingredients together until smooth. It might take a while and you might need to help it along a bit by stopping and mixing.
  • Once smooth, it's time to pour the açaí onto the board. Spread evenly and freeze.
  • You want to wait until the açaí is firm before placing the toppings. That will ensure the fruit won't sink into it. Place the toppings in neat rows and return to the freezer until ready to serve.
  • Note that it takes a while for the frozen platter to thaw so that it is scoopable. You might want to remove it from the freezer about an hour before serving.
  • Drizzle with almond butter. We added a tbsp or two of oil to thin the almond butter so that it drizzles nicely. Warming the butter in the microwave will also ensure it drizzles easily.

How much in advance I can freeze this? Like can this be done two weeks in advance to Purim and be frozen together with the fruit toppings?

Yes, although, the longer fruit sits in the freezer- the mushier it will get upon defrosting. So 2 weeks should be fine, less time would be even better. But, as Victoria Dwek always says, that 15% of a difference in taste is not worth the hassle of prepping everything fresh. If it makes sense for you, prep in advance.

Is there any banana in the açaí? Why do the bought açaí bowls always taste like banana? I really don’t like bananas and because of that I never eat açaí bowls but I see this recipe doesn’t call for any bananas so I would love to try it and just want to make sure that the frozen açaí itself doesn’t have bananas added

this recipe does not taste like bananas. I know what you mean, many stores must add in bananas- acaii packets have no banana in it

I’ve had the tray with the gold handles for a couple years now and I get a ton of use out of it. In the summer I use it weekly to serve fruit as dessert.

Give the acai enough time to defrost! Not saying how I know. Maybe because I had the in-laws over and we were hacking through the icy acai.

OMG same! I bought that gold handled tray for Succos and made a stunning acai board. Took it out of the freezer 2 hours before shaloshudis but it was basically rock solid! I used acai, strawberry, some almond milk to thin, and a little maple syrup. Was the almond milk my mistake?

Love this Acai board! I just made it and followed the recipe above. From my experience, I think you only need to remove it from the freezer about a half hour before. I took it out a bit over an hour before and a few minutes into the party it was very soft already. It was so beautiful and appetizing that it pretty much got almost finished in the first few minutes! I only froze the acai mixture on the board and then put on the toppings when I took it out of the freezer. Maybe if you freeze with the toppings you would need more time to defrost but not sure.

can I put bananas on the board and freeze it with it on? I want to try a kosher for pesach version as a refreshing dessert Is there any fruit that I should avoid freezing. It would be most convenient if I can prepare this fully a few days in advance
