There’s a lot of communicating going on in WhatsApp. But can you easily remember the things you need to follow up with later?
WhatsApp is definitely the best messaging app there is, but often information gets lost in chats or groups, and it is hard to save information for future reference. This is especially true if you use it for business and want to prepare a text or write down an idea so you can follow up later.
We’ve got two tips on how you can use WhatsApp to stay on top of your to do list.
First, you can make your own private space in WhatsApp to forward messages you want to save or simply jot down any thoughts, reminders, and the grocery list.

All you need to do is create a new group and add one person, name the group “To Do” or something else,

then remove that person, and you now have your own personal space!

Once you send a message to your private group, it will be there for later and when you’ve accomplished the task or note you sent there, you can delete it so as not to clog up space.
How is this different from simply using Notepad? When tasks come up within Whatsapp, for example, a colleague asks you to handle “X,” you can simply forward the task to your personal chat. You don’t need to type it up in a separate list.
Step-by-Step instructions:
Open WhatsApp > Press the note icon on top left > New Group > Choose a person > Next > Name the group > Create > Press the group name > Scroll down to participants, and press on the other person > Remove from group.
TIPS

- Add a picture of yourself as the profile picture to easily find your personal chat in all your chats.
- Pin the chat for easy access.
On iPhone: Swipe right on the chat you want to pin, then tap Pin.
On Android: Tap and hold the chat you want to pin, then tap Pin chat
The second tip we have for you is to dedicate a separate chat for any large topic you have with one specific person. You might want to have a “house renovation” or “shidduchim” chat with your spouse. Maybe you want a chat about your toddler with the neighbor who is his morah, but also your friend. If it’s a specific topic you’ll need to reference several times in the future, decide if it deserves its own searchable space. Just make sure you don’t do any other chatting in there!
It's also a great place to save recipes you can search for!
When I have a child in shidduchim, I make a private chAt with my husband. All info goes in there. If a shidduch is not interesting, we delete it. Child gets engaged, we remove the chat.
That’s such a great idea!
I do this too, but I dont delete any names. Like this when someone reds the same name I have the name and the person who red it first with info I got. Some shidduchim you do end up looking into again and it works out at the end.
I have 2 chats with my husband- one is shopping list and anytime I think of something to add I just put it there
the second is reminders and appointments both have been super convenient
I use the Reminders App. You have the option of putting in a date and time and it will come up as a notification. This way you can make reminders days in advance (Think call dr for follow up, call teachers in evening).. and you can just press on it when it’s done and it’ll disappear (if set up to hide completed tasks)
I have many different lists: grocery, appointments, etc
I love this idea! Brilliant!!
I tried following the instructions; a) I don’t see any icon at upper left. b) when I tried to make a new group I was asked to put in names of participants from my contacts. Ever I am , obviously, not on my contacts list.
To sum up, I had no success at all. Very frustrating to say the least. It seemed such a great idea.
U can add ANY contact into the group… it’s just for the formality of making a group…then u kick that person from the group so u have an empty group all to urself…
U don’t have to add YOUR number per se 🙂
Try adding ur cousin / family / spouse n then removing them after grp is formed
Hi Shulamith, what phone are you using? If using an android, the new chat icon would be at the bottom right. New Chat > New Group. Then choose any participant; you will remove them right away and have your own chat/personal space. Please let us know that this worked for you.
I just tried to submit a comment, and that didn’t work either! HELP PLEASE
How to set reminder in what’s app. Pls guide
Why not just install telegram which provides this feature called “saved messages” and also a free cloud storage “mycloudstorage”. Telegram saves to the cloud and won’t use device storage. Just keep those non confidential private stuff is fine
My daughter loves to send smileys to people, and is forever asking me to do it. I don’t like asking my friends if she can send smileys to them, though they don’t really seem to mind. After reading this article, I created a chat just for her to send smileys. She has no clue there’s no one on the other end 🙂
I use my chat to keep track of feeding my baby. I send myself “left” “right” “bottle” and the timing is saved with the msg
I took this up a notch. Now that Whatsapp Communities are a thing, I created a community just for myself and my husband. I put in all these chats… shopping list, recipes, taxes, purim, etc. and now they’re all organized and easy to find!
There is another advantage to this. If somebody has WhatsApp desktop on a home computer it allows someone on the computer, for example a child home alone, to text the person‘s phone to this chat. I use it with my kids who too young to have phones, but old old enuf to be home alone. Pin the chat to the top of what’s app to make it easy to find . Call it “text mom”
