This only counts if you still wear it!
Today we are introducing a new series here at Between Carpools! One Tuesday per month, we will post a random question. The five of us will answer that question and then we will invite all of you to answer it in comments or on our social media platforms. Some will simply be for fun and some will be more thought provoking.
Back then, it was so hard to find a good black velour zip up with no words on it. I still come up after a full day or start my day with it and wear it with a black slinky skirt. The interesting thing about it is that it’s a size small and today it would be like a size large. It’s loose and comfy. Why did sizes get so small??
Victoria: My fur coat.
My grandfather a”h was a furrier and he gave me an ivory fur with my name embroidered inside around the time of my bat mitzvah. I don’t know if it was so practical at the time, but that coat has followed me to winter weddings for decades and decades. It would also come to the rescue at the end of winter pregnancies…it’s roomy and super warm and was the only non-maternity coat that always fit.
Shaindy: I really don’t keep much,
but I recently found my Shabbos sheva brochos outfit at my mother’s house – and it actually fit! And I still loved it. I wore it to my niece’s Shabbos sheva brochos just last week!
Renee: A chambray skirt I bought at H&M when I was 16 for $20.
Whenever I wear it, I still get asked – without fail – where it’s from. It’s just a great style, color and texture. It never goes out of style. My friend who bought it at the time still owns it too!
Esti: I have a dark denim jacket from way back in my former life.
(Anyone else have a time in their life that was so different from their current life that they just refer to it as a former life? Only me?) I was working in the Wall Street area and there was a Gap right behind my building. After 9/11, all the retail stores in the area were closed for a long time because they didn’t have functioning utilities. By the time the Gap reopened, it was like a time capsule of “before.” The shelves and racks had all the items from months before – but the prices were all at rock bottom clearance levels. I don’t know what I paid for it, but this perfect jacket was a no-brainer. It has classic jean jacket styling, but in a dark, lightweight denim. 20 years later, it’s still the perfect jacket. Because you don’t really close a jean jacket, it always fits!
We want to hear from you! Please leave us a comment about your oldest piece of clothing – that you still wear…
A sweater that I got to wear to my first year PTA! 15 years ago…. It brings back such memories…
My oldest piece of clothing I have is my blue ultra suede jumper that I wore when I got engaged. It’s kyh 44 years old. I wear it each year at our Pesach seder night.
Wow!!! How does it still fit?
A wrap robe from Crabtree I got almost 19 years ago when i got married!
My 8th grade graduation shirt. It's a real elegant flounce shirt so it still fits and I wear it every year for yom Kippur
A wrap around black skirt from 1999. It always fits, hence its a wrap around!
Am I the only one that has such a different size than my old clothes since having kids B”H? Nothing fits in the closet unless I bought it this winter!!!
Same! Cant wear anything from 2 years ago let alone my bas mitzvah! Or even sheva brachos…
My 12 grade shabbos robe, it’s velour with a hood and a front zipper. Even though I’m a bigger size it is just a little snug. The elbows are a little worn out and I sewed up the seam at the bottom of the zipper a lot of times. I can’t bring my self to throw it. It’s cozy and still flattering. I wear it a few times a year.
Thanks for saying this!!! Me too 🙂
Some things are a little loose and they just have that extra bit of room. I don’t even attempt to put on skirts from years ago. But a top can sometimes still fit… don’t feel bad…:)
A pencil skirt i got in 2009. My first pencil skirt. Was so excited with it
Similar to Leah, I still have a slinky skirt from Junees that I must have bought in 11th grade. It’s a size medium and has a roomy fit on me, whereas when I recently tried on a size 2X of an identical skirt (from a different brand) was extremely snug on me. Not sure why brands keep shrinking their clothing sizes…
It’s problematic from a tzniyus standpoint as well as body image.
I was wondering the same thing! I used to be an XS/S now I’m a medium in most jewish brands. What happened??
A black lycra sleeveless shell from 6th (!) grade.
This was from before shells became a wardrobe staple
I wear it all the time, throw, it into the dryer and its still as good as new!!!
The shells they sell today dont last more than a yr at most
A bizz skirt! Remember those?!
A designer forest green cardigan from 20 yrs ago…. haven't worn it in a long time and just pulled it out again. Prob paid a lot for it back then, but still looks so beautiful! (Won't say how much weight I gained since and still fits)
The top I wore on my first date ! I’ll never throw it out !
My winter coat from high school! I still love it for freezing days!
Still fits somehow, even though I gained too much weight over the last 15 years.
When I was around 9 I spent a few weeks by my grandmother in Toronto. She took me to winners and bought me a short black cotton skirt. It’s still in my drawer and I throw it on when I just need a short skirt to wear, I’ll work out in it too
A BLACK JACKET FROM H&M I BOUGHT IN 10TH GRADE!
My Anna Meyer shell!! It washes so well and it’s a rich elegant black that doesn’t compare to any other brand shell!! Sadly they don’t sell them anymore:(
