We do our best to avoid them, but after a while, those stains need some attention.
A while back, we posted about using a specific type of deodorant to avoid those pesky underarm stains on white shirts. It definitely helps to minimize them, but over time we noticed some stains setting in.
These are the five methods I tried:
- A mix of hydrogen peroxide and Dawn dish soap.
- A mix of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and Baking Soda and half as much Dawn dish soap.
- A paste of OxiClean and water.
- Spray n Wash stain remover
- Fels Naptha laundry bar
I applied all the treatments and let the shirts sit for one hour. I then washed them all in hot water with Tide free & gentle and added OxiClean White Revive to the load. (Those are my standard white load detergents.) Number 2. the peroxide/baking soda/Dawn mix was the clear winner. The Oxi paste was runner up. The others didn’t come close.
After that initial success, I treated all the shirts with the winning combination and let them sit overnight. I then rewashed them, again with Tide and White Revive.
I was shocked to see that almost all the stains were completely gone! Such a simple solution of inexpensive products and the shirts were almost as good as new! Going forward, I plan to treat all the shirts with this stain remover every few weeks to avoid the build-up altogether. Let me know if you try it!
Does this wok for difficult stains on white clothing?
Yes, it should!
Does this consistency come out like a paste you rub on or something you would put in a spray bottle?
The pic shows a toothbrush so seems like a paste
correct.
I did this too, but the dawn creates too much suds for front loader washing machine. I stopped doing it for that reason.
Does this work even after the stains have gone through the dryer?
Yes, it should.
I use this “magic potion” and it worked on magenta colored gel pen that got on my t-shirt and was not washed for a while, but you must rinse it out in a sink completely before putting it in a washing machine. The Dawn is too sudsy for the washer.
I use cold water and LA’s totally awesome degreaser spot remover. It’s at the dollar store and yellow. Spray. Wait 2 min and it comes right off. If not scrub a little. Never failed
Tilex spray works like magic
How about towels that don’t come out white from the wash but rather grey ish
does this work with any dishsoap- (live in israel would use israeli brand…)
Thanks! Can’t wait to try this. Why don’t you use regular tide for white shirts? What’s the difference between the different types of tides.?
Curious about this too!
