With the right tools and a bit of practice, you can give your sons’ a barber-worthy haircut, without covering the house in hair! Tips and tricks, below.
My husband started giving our boys haircuts at home when their hair grew to the breaking point during COVID and …just never stopped. It’s easier, cheaper and more convenient than going to the barber. Do you want to try it but don’t know how to get started? Are you scared of the mess? Keep reading, we have the solutions!
This Remington Vacuum Haircut Kit is going to be your new favorite toy! This haircut machine vacuums the hair as it cuts, making the cleanup so much easier. No, it won’t catch every single hair, but it will catch most.

For a successful haircut, you have to learn the number system on the machine.
The numbers indicate guards: how short the cut will be.
- Our general rule of thumb is to use the #2 guard around the bottom, up until the head starts curving.
- Keep moving up one number as you move up your son’s head: we use a 3 around the curve of the head,
- then a 4 for around the top of the head,
- leaving the very front (and around the ears) for scissors.
Use this Kiss Precision Trimmer for the edges of the haircut (around the bottom, sides) to give the cut a sharp, clean look. Don’t skip this! Neat edges really make all the difference. Truth is, it takes some trial and error to get your cuts looking professional. As you cut more and more, you’ll learn the number system and get a feel for your child’s hair, and your haircuts will look better and better.
Some tips and tricks!
1. Keep your boys in undershirts only under the cape, less layers means it’s easier to jump straight for a shower once they’re done.
2. Lightly spray the top of your child’s hair for a more neat and even front.
3. Not sure if you’re ready to take on haircuts? Watch the barber next time you go to see how he does it for an up close and personal tutorial.
I’ve been doing for years. I always put a disposable tablecloth underneath before starting the haircut. Also, in warm I cut outside, easier on cleanup. I have a backless stool that everyone sits on as its much easier to reach all angles. I bought a cordless haircutting machine and it’s a gamechanger since there’s no tangling in wires.
The trick to making haircuts comfortable is investing in a good machine like the barbers have. They don’t pinch the skin. We use the Panasonic one. It has a different system with the guards, which makes it more customizable.
As a mom of four boys and many many haircuts, it was a game changer from the oster one we used to have.
Which model panasonic did you buy? I’m looking to buy a new machine

I’d also love to know which machine to get
Any tips how to cut the front with scissors so that it lies nicely, I find it the trickiest part, especially with my older boys
Do the biggest size with the machine, like a 7 or 8
I actually watched a video on how to cut bangs… but the gist is you cut in (blades pointing to the head) not across the forehead. I also find that trimming scissors really helps
Thanks so much for this post! Really needed these tips!
You forgot that you need to know the Halachos! There are very specific halachos about haircuts and peyos. Generally less then a number 2 blade is not allowed, even to trim, for anywhere from top of ear to where the hair goes down to temple. There’s a Pocket Halacha on Haircuts sold in Judaica stores by R Wiesenfeld that gives exact diagrams.
Thank you for bringing this up! Halochos are the most important prerequisite when it comes to boys haircuts!
Get an umbrella cape instead of a regular one.

Is the kiss precision blade trimmer like the peanut?
Can you teach us how to do the bangs?. Like where ontop of head to start from. And if to cut straight across or rounder and how to blend? Thanks
Thank you for this great post!
After making many mistakes, I’m finally happy with how haircuts have turned out! Here is what I do:
I start the bangs from where the yarmulka ends, using a 7/8 blade (or scissors).
If you find it looks too stark, blend the top of the bangs to the side, using a 6 blade (or scissors).
Round out the corners of the bangs.
Tip: Give mini haircuts to stretch out haircuts by trimming the last inch of the hair with a 2.

I have been giving my family (girls and boys) haircuts forever. When we’re done we spread the hairs outside for the local bird population to use in their nests. It feels nice to know that we are doing our part to sustain our local ecosystem.
Wow that’s nice!
I have a shartek. It’s wireless and works so smoothly.
So my husband had coined a new term. It’s called the Between Carpools Haircut. He came home from shul and said the the boys in front of him had a between carpools haircut like our boys lol! We’re all learning and the boys have got to be the guinea pigs! It has a few bumps and it’s not quite straight but we gotta start somewhere! Don’t worry he has a lot of confidence my skills will improve and appreciates the money we will save after we pay off the new machines and equipment. And therapy for the kids who’s self esteem suffered. ,
