It might be just one sentence. But they’re sentences that have impacted our lives.
So, we have a few lines to share. And though the content in this post might be short, it doesn’t mean it’s less important. To the contrary.
Below are some things grandmothers of BCP team members shared with us:
My grandmother has a line, “Kill them with kindness.” When someone is not nice to you, be extra nice. It’s the best thing she ever taught me. -Leah
My husband’s grandmother had a sentence she always used to say, “צום נישט רעדן קומט עס נישט.” Literally, it means it doesn’t get close to not speaking, but the literal translation doesn’t capture the meaning. More clearly, it means–you can never take words back. Silence is always best. You don’t always have to talk. -Renee

My husband’s grandmother had great lines, including “koza אויף צוריק גייט א.” “A goat goes backwards.” Koza is goat in Polish. The deeper meaning is to move forward and look ahead. No regrets and thoughts of could’ve would’ve and should’ve. -Tzila (BCP Production Admin)
“You should smile more often. You’re much prettier when you smile,” my grandmother told me one day. It sounds so simple but that one line changed everything. First, who wouldn’t want to be prettier? But that’s just on the surface. Being a person who smiles made me who I am. -Victoria
Can you share short but impactful things your grandmother taught you? Comment below!
“A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!”
And in the same vein…
“The second bite tastes just as good as the first!”
“vus m’tit, tit men far zich alien”
Meaning, that all our actions, directly affect us in the long run.
*far zich alein…
If there’s room in the heart, there’s room in the home
My grandmother used to tell us “you can see an ant on someone else but not an elephant on yourself” – sooo true
Be a mentsh
When my grandmother wld tell my boys, “you should be a mensch and then a Talmid Chacham, because a Yalmid Chacham who doesn’t have good middos isn’t worth anything!”
My ‘Super Savta’ was always memorizing smart and inspiring quotes and sharing them with us. She now has severe dementia but her quotes are unforgettable! “A slip of the lip will sink a ship,” “Worry is interest paid on a debt you do not owe,” “inch by inch it’s a cinch, yard by yard it’s hard,” “your health is your wealth,” and her most famous one (she even gave out pins with this one!) – “if you don’t have a smile, I’ll give you one of mine”
My grandmother would say in Hebrew, “Im zeh tzanua, az zeh yaffe!” when asking her opinion on clothing. She’s not a finatic in any form but has her foundations strong.
