Love the look of a neatly wrapped gift but can’t quite manage to get it right? We broke it down for you.
Somehow, this important life skill is not included in any curriculum of childhood, but eventually you grow up and want to present a nice gift. With a few simple steps, you’ll have a nicely wrapped package that you can dress up further any way you’d like.
Want some gift-wrapping inspiration and options? See this post!
1. Measure out the paper needed for the job. Not too much, not too little – a bit like Goldilocks.
You want the longer side to overlap just a little – maybe the width of a finger. On the shorter side, you should use the height of the gift to determine how long the paper should be. This can be trimmed down later so you have a bit of leeway. After wrapping a few gifts, you’ll get to feel how long it should be. Note: Using wrapping paper with lines on the back makes this job MUCH easier. Your paper will be cut straighter and more accurately to size.
2. Place the gift face side down on the paper.
3. Bring the longer edges together and secure with a piece of tape. If the item is long, use two or more pieces of tape to keep things secured neatly.
4. Using one finger, press the paper against the shorter edge of the gift, and then fold the paper on that diagonal. Repeat on the other end of this side.
5. Smooth and fold the top flap down over the bottom one and press a crease into the paper along the edge of the gift.
6. If the end of the paper is now in a point, fold that point over to make a straight line. If it’s already straight, there’s no need to fold.
7. Now fold that side up over the gift and secure it with tape. If the item you are wrapping is thick, there’s no need to make the side edge go over the top. Simply secure on the side.
8. Repeat with the other side of the gift.
Now flip the package over and admire your ready-to-impress gift! At this point you can decorate the package or not. Add ribbons, bows or a message. Or glue on some chocolate Chanukah gelt for a bonus treat! We have gift wrap inspiration in this post.
