We love bringing Yom Tov and other Jewish themed crafts to our readers. You can never have too many!
A reader recently brought to our attention this glue and salt painting craft that’s become popular lately. We decided a Chanukah version would be perfect!
So what do you need? Some Elmer’s style school glue, table salt (we tried kosher salt and it did NOT work well), heavyweight printer paper (regular printer paper will work, too, but this is better), paintbrushes and some watercolor paints. This project will be done in two stages with drying time in between.

We designed these simple line drawings that would be easy to trace with the glue.
Trace as smoothly as possible, but you can carefully clean up any mistakes after adding the salt.
Cover the glue with table salt
and carefully shake off the excess.
Let this dry fully.
Dilute a bit of watercolor paint in plastic bowls of water. Using a separate paintbrush for each color is most efficient.
Using the brush, dab a bit of watercolor onto the salt outline.
Watch the color spread along the salt, but not on the paper beneath it! Play around with color blending, too, for extra creativity.
Rifka says
How long does it take for the glue to dry before you can start painting?
Mindy says
Pretty! How long does it take the glue to dry?
Esther says
Would this work with regular washable paint as well?
Chaya goldstein says
I did this with my son and it kept him busy for hours!
I made the glue outline early in the morning and by dinner time it was ready to paint.
I used water with a drop of food coloring in it (instead of paint) and it worked perfectly and was easier to clean up.
E says
Are these water color paint washable?
Johnny says
Why not card stock paper it’s much cheaper 40 sheets $7
Shira says
Or bristol board aka oaktag? Big sheet is $1, cut it up to make several smaller ones. Use the non-shiny side.
Art teacher says
I’ve done this when the glue was still wet. Still works but not as well as when its dry.
Fun activity! says
I have been doing this for years first with my kids and then my class. It is really fun and when you use the watercolor paints that are on a tray you can make the effect look like tye dye. Just another option. I usually do this on black cardstock paper for the best results. It makes all the colors pop!
