Our Kids’ Favorite Jewish Comic Books

It’s so easy to teach kids to love reading when there’s so many exciting comic books.

There are many things we love about comic books.

First – it seems that, unlike any other books, they transcend age. The beginner readers aren’t intimidated by them, yet the teens (and hey, even us) love reading them too. Because of this, we feel like we get the best bang for the buck when we buy a comic, because almost everyone in  the family will read it.

Two – It gets beginner readers to absolutely love reading. They get hooked! They feel accomplished when they finish a book, even if it’s a comic book. The images help them read and understand in context and they build skills which transitions them to reading regular books and novels.

Three – You can read them over and over again and not get bored.

Four – They make education very exciting, and there’s so many books on topics that really enrich their knowledge. Our kids know a lot because they read comics!

That being said, we have a lot of favorites between all our households. Here are our kids’ favorite picks (we know there’s a lot!).

M. Safra Comics

There’s a series of small-sized comics, by M. Safra, that are based on the suspense novels of Israeli suspense novelist Shmuel Argaman. Titles include Mystery Island, The Girl Who Escaped the Convent, The Stormy Seas, Trouble Up North, the Submarine Sailed at Midnight, Operation Iraq, Escape the Inquisition, and Suspense in the Sahara. We love them all.

Just Imagine Series

Besides for the comic books listed above, favorite author M. Safra is also the author of the popular Just Imagine! Series.

The Titanic Series

Titanic is a classic, and we’re excited whenever the latest edition comes out. Find more in the Series over here.

The Tannaim Series

This series is great because it teaches about the Tanaaim. Fascinating stories if you will! And they’re actually learning something. My son loves them. Some titles are available with Prime delivery.

Super Agent Gizmo

Another series our kids love, originally serialized in The Circle Magazine. Great for younger kids.

Ahrele Series

By Aharon Margalit, based on his amazing life story of triumph over struggles.

Mexican Ransom

This one was a hit.

Escape from Egypt

This book teaches kids all about yetzias mitzrayim in great detail.

Lights from the North

Takes place in Communist Russia.

Dovid Hamelech

My son knows everything in class because of comic books like Dovid Hamelech and the Plishtim… but he loves the ones full of action.

Honorable Mentschen

This isn’t a story comic, but rather a book which teaches derech eretz in comic-form. It’s entertaining and educational at the same time.

Two and a Tevi

These were my kids’ first comics. The second volume is available over here. Even though they’re simpler than what’s out there today, these comics got them hooked on reading at an early age.

The Kichels Series

Of course. A treat for a whole family.

Are there any comic books that are written for girls? Or feature girls? My daughter loves comic books, and is happy reading “boyish” ones, but I’d love to have some with girls in them for her.
