You wonder, “How is her makeup still on?” It might not be simple (it for sure isn’t!), but if you want to know what the makeup artists do to keep makeup lasting throughout Shabbos (and even longer), these are the tricks.
As a makeup artist with a reputation for ensuring long-lasting makeup, I am excited to share my expert tips to help you look stunning and confident throughout the Yom Tov season. Let’s dive into the secrets of achieving makeup that stands the test of time!
1. PREPPING THE CANVAS
Long-lasting makeup starts with a well-prepped canvas. Follow these steps for a smooth and lasting base:
a. Cleansing – Begin by cleansing your face to remove any dirt, oil, or impurities that might affect makeup adherence. You’d be surprised to see how much makeup and dirt can actually be sitting on your skin. I like Bioderma’s Makeup Remover Cleanser.
b. Moisturizing – Apply a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to hydrate your skin without making it overly grteasy. The It Cosmetics ‘Confidence in a Gel Lotion’ Oil-Free Moisturizer is great for this.
c. Primer – Never skip the primer! It creates a smooth surface, fills in fine lines, and helps your makeup adhere better and last longer. The Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Blurring Balm in Universal is an awesome primer, as well as the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Hydrating Makeup Primer which also gives the makeup lasting power.
2. FOUNDATION
For Shabbos and Yom Tov, I recommend this Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation. Choosing the right foundation is crucial for a long-lasting look! Rather than applying a thick layer at once, build up the coverage gradually to avoid caking and ensure durability. I love this Youthforia Blush Brush for applying foundation in thin layers.
After you apply foundation with the brush, go over it with a damp beauty blender like this makeup sponge from AOA Studio in tapping motions to help achieve a flawless finish.
3. LAYERING
Layering is key to long-lasting makeup.
- Start by applying cream contour to the hollows of your cheeks, along the jawline, and the sides of your nose, blending it seamlessly into your skin. I love the Westman Atelier Contour Stick or the Lancôme Foundation Stick in Shade 450.
- Next, dab on a cream blush to the apples of your cheeks for a natural flush. I like elf’s cream blush in shade Maui.
- Apply a bit of concealer under your eyes.
- Now comes the crucial step: set your under eyes with setting powder and go over your entire face with a light dusting of setting powder. Great setting powders include: One/Size Setting Powder, Givenchy Setting Powder, or Coty Airspun Translucent Powder (all very different price points!)
- Then, go over your contour with a powder bronzer and top your cream blush with a
powder blush. M.A.C. Powder Blushes are always a good pick.
The powder products layered over the cream products create a protective barrier that lock in the layers.
4. EYES
I like to use concealer as an eyeshadow primer for a smooth base.
Use a waterproof eyeliner like this one (or Stila Liquid Liner) and mascara to prevent smudging. Also, layering a dark brown or black powder eyeshadow over the eyeliner will increase longevity. For intensified color, tightline with waterproof eyeliner for a fuller lash look. Inglot get pot is another good eyeliner option.
5. LIPS
Again, layering is key. Start with a long lasting lipliner such as Maybelline Crayon or NYX Pencil Lipliner. Fill in the lips with a thin layer of long lasting lipstick and top with your favorite creamy lipstick or gloss.
6. SETTING SPRAY
Complete your look with a setting spray to seal everything in place and ensure your makeup stays flawless. I love the On ‘Til Dawn Setting Spray by One Size.
