I needed a strategy. My copy of The Kichels Collection 4 had arrived in the mail. I needed to hide it from my family so that I could actually read it and tell you all about it here.
The only problem was, that if anyone knew that the new Kichels was in the house, it would be very hard to get my own alone time with it.
I waited patiently until all the younger kids were sleeping before I took that brown box with the Feldheim label out of the hiding place and tore it open…
Just then, a teenage daughter walked into the room.
“Is that the Kichels?”
Oh no, I blew my cover.
There was one thing I knew for sure. I wanted to enjoy my Kichels in peace and quiet. Not with a teenager looking over my shoulder. Because the Kichels are one of those joys in life. Is it the opportunity to laugh at the quirks of our lives, feel like “that doesn’t only happen to me?” and feel very, very validated. The Kichels shows us the funny nuances of our days in a way that no one else ever can or has. Creators Bracha Stein and Chani Judowitz are, frankly, quite brilliant and we hope they keep writing Kichels strips for years to come.
“Ok, fine. You can have it tonight. But tomorrow, I get it.”
She disappeared into her room. The door was closed (if anyone knew she had the Kichels…) and I did not see her until the next day.
Once one child knew about The Kichels, the secret was out. I needed a new plan. I would wake up really early on Shabbos morning. The Kichels was worth foregoing my only morning I can sleep.
So far, it was working. I sank into my most comfortable chair on Shabbos morning with an iced coffee, a mini cheesecake, and my Kichels. Can you picture it? Really bliss.
There’s nothing quite like being able to laugh uncontrollably in an empty room. Just until you hear the pitter patter of a 9-year-old coming down the stairs, and soon hear her breathing as she tries to cuddle in next to you and read the right sides as I read the lefts.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish The Kichels without a child on my lap or behind my shoulder. But one thing is for sure. It’s brilliant (how do they keep coming up with these?). It’ll have you laughing. And there’s no other book that the whole family universally enjoys this much.
