If you have a few interior design principles down pat, you can create a beautiful space on your own without spending a fortune.
As an interior designer, I truly believe that everyone deserves a beautiful space to call their own. And the great thing is, even though trends come and go, the core principles of good design always stick around. So, I’m here to share some simple ways to achieve a high-end designer look without spending a fortune.
1. Rugs: Grounding Your Space (with Intention)
Let’s talk about rugs! A rug can really transform a room. It defines the space, adds warmth, and anchors your furniture in such a great way. The biggest mistake I see people make is choosing a rug that’s too small. It’s all about intentional rug sizing! You really want to aim for a rug that lets all your furniture legs rest comfortably on it, or at the very least, make sure the front legs of your furniture are on the rug. 8×10 and 9×12 rugs are usually good go-tos for living rooms, but always consider the room’s proportions to make sure it feels right. And texture is key here! I always love a rug with a pattern that hides dirt. I have this one in my playroom and love it.

2. Intentional Mixing, Not Matching
The days of buying those super matchy-matchy furniture sets are long gone. A curated, collected look is what really makes a space feel high-end. So, instead of buying a matching bedroom or dining room set, try selecting pieces from different sources that complement each other in terms of style, color, and texture. And don’t be afraid to invest in a few key statement pieces that really reflect your personality. Then, you can build the room around them. The goal is to create a harmonious contrast. Think about mixing wood tones, textures like leather, velvet, and linen, and even different styles, like modern and vintage. This creates so much more visual interest and depth in a room.

3. Declutter & Curate for Calm
In our increasingly fast-paced world, a clutter-free home is so important for our mental well-being. Beautiful spaces are both organized and curated. It’s not just about tidying up; it’s about being mindful about what you choose to keep on display. The best way to minimize clutter is to make sure everything has its own designated place. Smart storage solutions are key here! Think hidden compartments and furniture with built-in storage. And remember the concept of “less but better.” Choose fewer, higher-quality items that you truly love and use. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes!”

4. Illuminate with Intention
Lighting is another crucial element. It’s so important for both function and ambiance. So, ditch those boring, builder-grade fixtures! A statement light fixture can be a major focal point in any room. Think about sculptural pendants, modern chandeliers, or artistic wall sconces. There’s no need to pay designer prices for these either, as high-end styles looking styles are available at any price point. To really make the most of your space, maximize natural light with sheer curtains, strategically placed mirrors, and light-reflecting paint colors.

5. Walls that Wow (with Personality)
Don’t forget about your walls! Blank walls are a missed opportunity. Walls are a canvas for self-expression! Create gallery walls with a mix of family photos, art prints, and other items that tell your story. And don’t be afraid to go big with a single, impactful piece of art. Mirrors are also fantastic. They not only make a space look larger but also reflect light and add a decorative touch. See this Between Carpools post for tips on creating a gallery wall.

6. Streamlined Furniture Choices
When it comes to furniture, we should prioritize quality, comfort, and functionality over having a lot of stuff. A well-designed room often has less furniture. So, take a good look at what you really need and remove anything that’s unnecessary. Choose pieces that can serve multiple purposes, like a sofa bed, an ottoman with storage, or a dining table that can expand. It’s always a good idea to invest in fewer, high-quality pieces that will last for years, rather than filling your space with cheaper, disposable furniture. And if possible, go for furniture that can be easily reconfigured or adapted to different spaces.

7. Hardware as Jewelry
Let’s talk about hardware. Upgrading your cabinet and door hardware is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to refresh your home. Hardware is more than just functional; it’s a design statement. Don’t be afraid to mix metals, like brass, chrome, and black, for a more contemporary and curated look. It’s a small detail that can make a big difference! These little knobs are one great example.

8. The Drama of Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains
Finally, let’s talk about curtains. Floor-to-ceiling curtains are a design trick that instantly elevates a space. Hanging curtains at or near ceiling height creates the illusion of taller ceilings and adds a sense of drama. And remember, length is key! While 96″” curtains are a good starting point for 8-foot ceilings, always measure
carefully. Curtains that just kiss the floor or slightly puddle are generally preferred. The right curtains can really transform a room! See this post for ways to get beautiful curtains on a budget.
These essential design principles provide a timeless foundation for creating a beautiful and functional home. It’s about combining these basics with a mindful approach and letting your personality shine through in your space. So, don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with it!
