Want to enjoy your space a bit more? These home update tips might do the trick.
If your home’s lack of style is getting to you, here are some simple and low-cost updates to make you love your space! Even if you are short on time or have a limited budget, with these ideas, you can still do wonders for your home!
Bedrooms
1. Bedding. Switching out old sheets to something new and comfortable can do wonders for your sleep as well as make your bedroom look great! Here are some great options.
2. Full-Length Mirror. This one is more about practicality than looks, but you’ll still love this update. I have seen so many bedrooms without one but it is a necessity! If your mirror is going to be on the inside of your closet door, please don’t spend a lot. This is the mirror I have in my bedroom. If you want one that’s a bit nicer, this is a great one. Hang it up with command strips and boom, done.
3. Curtains. Get curtains and hang them high up. If you read my other post on BCP, you know what a big fan I am of this! Curtains make your ceiling look so much taller and pull a room together. Gamechanger!
4. Headboard. Headboards are a great way to completely change up the look of your space. Here is one that is simple, beautiful, and budget-friendly.
Living Room
5. Pillows. New pillows on a couch can do wonders for your space. A budget-friendly tip is to just buy new pillowcase covers. This way, you don’t have to replace the whole pillow. Another design tip if you do buy pillowcase covers is to go one size down. If your pillow is 20 x 20, buy an 18 x 18 pillowcase. This helps the pillow look fuller.
6. Throw blanket. I love throw blankets for the way they instantly make a space look cozy. Here is one that looks super yummy!
7. Rearrange your furniture. Sometimes, all you need is a new furniture layout to make your space feel complete.
Bathroom
8. Towels. Yummy, fluffy ones like some recommended in this post make taking a shower the pleasure it should always be!
9. Bath mat. There are so many amazing cheap options! And getting out of the shower onto a fluffy bath mat can make a huge difference.
10. Shower Curtain. This can update the look of your bathroom hugely while only setting you back a few bucks.
Laundry Room
11. Add a cute sign. Your laundry room is one of the most hardworking rooms in your home. It is also often the most neglected, style-wise. But you, as a hardworking mom spend so much time here! Let’s make it a room you like being in (at least, style-wise :)) That’s why I like having a sign in my laundry room to spruce it up. Here is a cute option.
12. Replace cabinet pulls. This can make a world of difference! By simply replacing your cabinet hardware with an updated set, you can make a world of difference in your laundry room. This cabinet pull, a bar like this, or a knob like this are all nice options.
13. Peel & Stick Backsplash. You can use peel and stick backsplash to update the wall between your cabinets. Here is a great option.

In terms of throw pillows, a great way to update your pillows without spending a lot is to look on AliExpress—they have tons of options in every style.

I would love more ideas for a bathroom . I have an outdated bathroom that could use some sprucing up until I remodel it.
Ahuva Schmerhold says
Hi Rebecca! Aside from the ideas mentioned in the post, you can update light fixtures, add new towel rods, new cabinet hardware, a coat of fresh paint on the walls and/or vanity, a new mirror, peel and stick floor tile, or a new shower head. All of these will help update your bathroom without too much expense or time on your part 🙂 Hope this helps!

I don’t recommend peel and stick floor tiles for bathrooms- we did this before selling our house and the moisture in the bathroom made the tiles not stick very well.
Ahuva Schmerhold says
Yes thank you for pointing this out. Peel and stick tiles in bathrooms can work for varying amounts of time depending on many factors but are usually not a temporary solution.

HI Ahuva
Found the article very interesting. Thank you. Do you have any ideas/suggestions on replacing kitchen cabinet doors to give the kitchen an affordable desperately needed facelift?
Chava says
For the full size mirror- would you put it in a walk in closet? or in the bathroom? I dont know where to put them. Just bought one with your link
Ahuva Schmerhold says
Hi Chava! I’m so happy you bought the mirror! I have mine on the door of my closet, but it really depends on what is most practical for you. My bathroom doesn’t have a spot for a full length mirror so that’s why it ended up in my closet. If you have a spot for it in your bathroom and that makes more sense for you, go for it!

Thank you for sharing such cool and at the same time budget-friendly options to update the the home! I would also add here such a thing as adding some live plants. Not only do they decorate the room but also improve the air quality. It’s a known fact that some indoor plants can even eliminate toxins from the air.

hi, could you send me the link to more headboards?
or do you have any full beds that come with headboards to recommend for a teens room?
thanks!

Oh, I like the idea of hanging new curtains. Yeah, it’s better to give preference to floor-to-ceiling curtains made of thick fabric. Such curtains are not just an accessory to your interior design. They perform several functions, such as stopping a passing audience from peering in, and they can be used to regulate the temperature of the room in which they hang, keeping the heat from outside in the summer from getting in, and the heat from inside in winter escaping. It will help your heating and cooling systems work less hard.
Integrity says
By the way, high-up hung curtains can also make your cooling and heating systems work more efficiently. They function as a barrier, keeping your house warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Very good suggestions! But also, don’t forget about lighting – it works wonders assuming it’s well thought-out. While changing bulbs and updating fixtures can greatly improve your lighting, there’s a very particular science to doing so. Understanding the different types of lighting in your home and what these types of lighting do can help you better understand how to improve your lighting dramatically.

Thanks for the ideas! The most pleasing thing is that they are pretty budget-friendly. In addition to what you mentioned, I would also suggest upgrading your kitchen by installing a new faucet. Faucets add style, substance, and value to the kitchen. By purchasing a faucet that comes with its own water filters, you can get even more benefits from it. It will probably pay for itself in less than a year if you drink a lot of bottled water.
