The Best Athletic Shoes and Sneakers

When it comes to sneakers, there’s a different type that suits each foot and activity. But where do you even start?

You need a good pair of sneakers. It could be for your morning walk, your new running routine, or more intense varieties of workouts. It’s really best to get a professional’s advice on what type of sneaker best suits your foot, especially if your feet ever bother you.

Although they might not be the coolest, podiatrists greatly prefer brands like Brooks, Asics, and New Balance over your trendy On Clouds.

Yet–there is no one brand for all feet. Narrow feet? You probably won’t do well with Brooks. Wide feet? Ditto with Nike. Different styles within different brands will also suit different feet, and the best is very subjective.

We rounded up some favorites that have come recommended so at least you know where to start!

Do you have a favorite pick? If commenting, include the type of foot and activity that your pick is suited for.

Running

Asics Kayano 31

$125. They may not be the trendiest sneakers, but they will have your back during your runs. These are the most recommended by podiatrists for their maximum support and comfort.

Running

New Balance Fresh Foam 860

$140. A runner up to the Asics, the New Balance pick has great stability and support.

Brooks Revel 7

$80-$100. This is the “best value,” pick if you’re looking for quality at a sub-$100 price tag. They’re very supportive and great for wider feet.

Running

Brooks Adrenaline

$140. Another top pick, but better for wider feet. The Brooks have good structure and heel-to-toe drop for those who need more arch support.

Running

Brooks @ Anthropologie

$140-$200. If you want Brooks quality in nicer colorways, Anthropologie has a handful of exclusive styles in the top recommended styles, from the Ghost Max (a top running shoes), to the Adrenaline featured above.

Running

Nike Pegasus 41

$104. One of the most comfortable and light as air shoes known.

Cross-Training

Nike Free Metcon 6

$90 This is the reliable pick for when you need stability and support for a variety of workout types.

Cross-Training

Nike Metcon 9

$120-$160 The Metcon 9 is also a top shoe for a variety workout. It’s heavier and more stable than the Metcon 6 for cross training, but it’s not recommended for running/cardio. The hard bottom is not so comfortable and supple when you’re constantly pounding the pavement.

Walking

Hoka Bondi 9

$169.99.
When you need to be on your feet for a few hours at a time, or when you just want to go for a long walk, the max cushioned Hoka Bondis will keep you supported. It’s like walking on a cloud. They’re also a top recommended shoe for those who suffer from plantar fascitis and those who have flat feet as they feature premium support and cushioning. Don’t, however, take them to your dance class.

Running

API Techloom Zipline Sneaker

$224 and up. Apparently, they’re not just fashion. A lot of work went into the making of this pricey running shoe. If you do have the foot type that fits the shoe (more narrow), they are the most advanced on the market. Are they that much better than the other running brands for the price? No. But if you really want both style and function, it’s there. See more colors and options on Zappos here. Note that although the retail price is high, there is a lot of price fluctuation and the prices of different colors seem to vary on different websites.

Daytime Comfort

On Cloud Cloudtilt

$160. Do you need something super comfortable and good for walking or standing for long hours? Turns out these are really like walking on a cloud. They’re meant for your busy day rather than athletic activities and come in great colors.

Daytime Comfort

Nike Waffle Debut

$75. A super sleek and cute looking shoe.
