Where to Get Homework Help

It’s that time of year where the nightly routine once again includes sitting down to do homework. Could your child use more help? (Could you use more help?)

Dial-A-Rebbi

For: Boys 3rd Grade and Up (and girls too)

Time: Sunday through Thursday, 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time

The hotline provides free help on school nights; dozens of boys call in weekly for help with chumash, mishnayos, and gemara. Calls are answered by talmidei chachamim who patiently explain the material and answer questions. Parents can call in too. The number to call is 216-99–TUTOR. Girls can call 845-82-GIRLS.

After the School Bell

For: Boys and Girls, Grades 1-8
Location: Anywhere
Cost: $18/month to cover administrative costs. Actual tutoring is free of charge.
Time: You arrange with your tutor
Subjects: Limudei Kodesh and Chol

After the School Bell is a chesed organization that connects high school volunteers with elementary students for accessible, online/Zoom tutoring. High school students volunteer as a way to give back for the community, and parents receive the much needed homework help. 

To Door NJ

For: Girls in Lakewood area
Location: Your Home
Cost: About $60/session
Time: See availability online
Subjects: Limudei Kodesh and Chol

To Door NJ is a paid service to make tutoring and homework help quickly accessible. Female tutors come straight to your door at the arranged time.

Khan Academy

For: Anyone
Location: Anywhere
Cost: Free
Subjects: All English Subjects
Contact: Sign Up online at KhanAcademy.org 

Khan provides free instruction on almost any subject. The courses are high quality, but unlike the resources above, the instruction is not personal. Great to catch up on classes/info that was missed. Note: As this is the only non-Jewish resource on this list, we recommend parental supervision to ensure content is appropriate.

Homework Kollel

For: Boys Grades 5-8
Location: Currently 6 locations in Lakewood, plus Miami and Detroit
Cost: Free
Time: Weeknights
Subjects: Limudei Kodesh

Homework Kollel is a place where boys can go to make their homework and nightly learning a rewarding experience. Rather than deal with the nightly struggle of doing homework, boys enjoy being in the Homework Kollel environment, with shoel u’meishivs on hand to answer their questions, whether they learn with their father or a chavrusa. Chavrusas are also arranged for boys who don’t have one. Boys earn prizes and take part in raffles as a reward for their participation.

    There’s a great homework helper agency called Homework Hour
    It’s in Lakewood for a couple of years already, and this year it’s also in Boro Park.

    For older students, there’s a free online tutoring app called UPchieve. There’s a similar version for middle school students called Learn to Be

    There is also a website that was started that becoming very popular it’s called tutors4yoo.comand they have tutors and it keeps on growing and new tutors keep adding themselves on. It seems very popular.
