No Lights, No Music! Our Favorite Shabbos-Friendly Toddler Toys

The ultimate roundup of toddler toys that won’t give you a headache, guaranteed!

You know those toys you impulse buy because the toddler’s always kvetchy and this toy will be the one to solve all your problems? And then you open it, and it turns out that not only are your problems not solved, you’re actually ready to throw it out the window because of the offensively loud music-beeping-singing-talking-flashing lights? I know you’re nodding along!

As it turns out, the toddler just needs an earlier bedtime. But the toy won’t stop singing, singing, and singing. So instead, inspired by one headache too many, here are my top 5 toys that your toddler can play with all week long. They won’t offend your ears, and are tried and true: they’ve been loved, passed down, and played with over and over.

Plus, a speech/language bonus: Toys that are loud, move, and light can be exciting, yes, but they can also be overstimulating. Toys that are simpler and go back to the basics can really inspire language development. Find some speech tips below!

Car Track

Kids can’t get enough of watching the cars go back-and-forth and back-and-forth. Make it a contest: whose car can get the farthest? This is a great toy to practice the word ‘go!’ Make the car ‘go,’ practice turn-taking saying ‘ready, set, go’ to teach this super versatile word.

Penguin Popper

Endless fun! Your big kids will love popping and your toddler will love running to get the balls.

Magnet Board

Everything about this one is a winner! Opening and closing doors, magnets so we can run to and from the fridge, scrambling and unscrambling magnets, this one is toddler heaven. Sure, you can practice ‘open’ and ‘close,’ but you can also put the magnets in the wrong places and practice ‘uh-oh!’ and ‘oops!’

Cookie Baking Set

There’s something super satisfying about assembling the cookies and frosting on the baking sheet. I like to call the couch or a chair the oven and have the toddler ‘put’ it in. Then, we have to wait till the cookies are ready! Set a timer for one minute and teach the ever-important skill of waiting.

Balance Board

Okay, this is really friendly for all ages. Rock back and forth, turn upside-down on the couch for a slide, put dolls to bed underneath…really endless possibilities with this one. As far as speech? My favorite thing to say with this one is ‘BE CAREFUL!’
