For this game, you need nothing more than paper, pens and some good imagination!
Last year, my daughter came home from school on Chanukah and told us about a fun game her teacher played with them in computer class. Of course, we made sure to add that to the Between Carpools Chanukah game collection!
For an in-person game, we switched from computers to pen and paper. Simply place a sheet of paper or a notepad with a pen at each seat. Every player sits down at one paper and writes a sentence to start a story. Then you play some musical chairs.

Put on some music while everyone circles the table and when it stops, each person sits down at the chair where they ended up. They now add a sentence to the story on that paper. For the first couple of rounds, don’t leave more than a minute or two for each sentence. Allow for more time as the rounds go on to let players read the developing story before adding their sentence.
When you have about 20 sentences (or whenever the crowd starts losing steam), every player can read the story they started aloud. This is when you find out how funny – or dark – your family is!
Virtual variation: For families who want to play a game across a long distance, this game can work well. Start as many google documents as there are players, label them by alphabet and share access with the group. Before the game starts, create an order for each player in which they’ll edit the documents. Ex: A, E, G, B, C, K, L, D, F, H, J, I for player one and so on. It’s best not to have everyone play each story in the same order.
Another way to play this game is that you cover the whole story besides for the last line. So wen the next person gets to the seat they can only read what the person ahead of them wrote and can only write one line. Once you are ready to read the stories out loud they will be really funny!
Like broken telephone! My kids love this
To play virtually, you can use shared Google Docs. Create a separate document for each player, label them by letters (e.g., A, B, C), and give everyone access. Players take turns editing their designated document, adding a sentence to the ongoing story.
Just played it tonight with my kids and they really enjoyed it. We added a cute twist while we were going around the table we did “follow the leader” with motions it made it more fun especially when mommy joined in….
