The tips and tricks you need to help your baby or toddler adjust to glasses, below.
Does your sweet new baby need glasses? Chances are you weren’t expecting this, don’t know where to start, how you’ll manage to keep them on, and maybe most of all, don’t want anything covering your baby’s adorable face! Been there, done that.
You got this! Let’s do some tips and tricks.
1. Choosing glasses:
soft, polycarbonate frames are going to be your best friends. You need no sharp edges or hinges where tiny fingers can get caught. No, they’re not as cute as the adorable, trendy ones, but there will be lots of those in the future.
2. Glasses with a strap around the back
come highly recommended for a reason: they stay on. For now, focus on function: your child needs to be able to see! Especially if the lenses are thick, the weight of the lenses will tilt the glasses forward and you need the strap to keep them on.
3. Consider getting a backup pair.
Babies and toddlers are not going to be gentle with their glasses. The glasses will be scratched up before you know it, and if you expect it it will be that much easier.
4. How often does your baby get his clothes dirty?
His glasses will need to be cleaned about that often. Best way to keep them clean is to hand-wash with soap + warm water and dry with a glasses cloth.
5. Expect an adjustment period.
Distract, distract, and distract! High-contrast visual toys, hand-over-hand play, whatever it takes to distract them from that ‘thing’ on their face, until wearing their glasses becomes second-nature (generally between 1-2 weeks).
6. Does your baby need to wear an eye-patch?

Putting glasses on a baby or young toddler is never easy, but the relief you feel when you watch them see definitely helps!
When my first needed glasses at 18 months I got him ones with the strap. He hated it! Ended up taking off the strap and he was much happier
When my 3rd needed glasses I skipped the strap all together.
I highly recommend only getting swing frames or the like.
They can stand up to a lot of abuse including being completely bent out of shape and bent back.
When they are little I recommend skipping the metal frames.
