Which Hairbrush Is the Best?

Really, that depends on what you’re using it for. These are the top hairbrush picks for every purpose.

You’ve already known for years that we’re a fan of the Wet Brush. It’s “the” brush. If you have a daughter that complains when you brush her hair, this takes care of that.

But there are other hairbrushing needs besides for the everyday. There’s blow-drying. There’s wigs. And then there’s the type of hair where all the regular rules don’t apply…like those gorgeous curly locks (Between Carpools is full of tips for those of you with curly hair!). And if you have little girls and want some easy styling tips, we have that too.

Now about those brushes. Perhaps you didn’t know that there’s a brush that does just what you need it too. Below are our favorites for all of your hairbrushing needs!

Best Overall for Everyday Use: The Wet Brush
The Wet Brush works great for wet hair after the shower (or after pool time), and it’s also great for dry hair. We don’t know what their secret formula is, but it glides through hair and detangles without pulling out hair.

Best for Wigs: A Curved Ventilated Brush
It’s gentler than a Wet Brush so it won’t pull out the hair in your wig.

Best for Blow Drying Hair: Olivia Garden Nano Thermic Hairbrush
Heat passes through this brush easily, so it’s super effective when blow drying, plus it’s light, so it’s easy to keep it moving through the hair. Comes in lots of widths, depending on your blow-drying needs (use larger barrels for longer hair).

Best for Curly Hair: Manetural Wide Tooth Comb for Curly Hair
The #1 tip for those with curly heads is: don’t brush your dry hair! It still gets brushed, but not with a brush, and not after the shower. For the best curls, hair is brushed in the shower while wet using a wide tooth comb like this. You can also keep more inexpensive versions like this 3 Pack Wide Tooth Combs on hand so that you’re never tempted to reach for that brush.

Best for a Really Smooth Pony: Stylemate Slick Back Hair Brush
While a Slick Back won’t take the knots out of your hair, it’s exactly what you need after brushing to make the top of your pony super flat. It’s the best for sleek ponytails and updos. It’s much softer than the Goody version, which also makes it a good options for babies with really fine hair as well. Many also use this as a Shabbos brush (Ask your Rav; you need a separate designated one) as it will smooth hair and make it neat without pulling it out.

Best for Boys: Goody Total Texture Brush
We like the Goody for boys. The bristles are soft, yet strong at the same time so it smooths out hair very well.

You missed my new favorite! The Conair Eco All-Purpose Detangling Brush ($5 from Walmart) .

The bristles are designed to be uneven so it detangles much more gently. Saves a lot of pain and hair damage!

It’s also meant for textured hair. My sister started using it for her preschooler with wild curls, and it makes the hair smoother and less frizzy.

We like the Square wet brush.
It detangles knots but is still soft on the hair.
