Learn the tips and tricks of making perfect, neat pigtails and low flip buns on your little girls.
No matter how long you’ve been a mother, we learned, we can always learn new tricks.
And while we’ve learned lots and lots about hair over the years, we also learned that every head is different and we simply can’t get enough tips when it comes to styling our daughters’ hair!
Often, it’s those one or two simple tips that make a world of a difference. They make it easier to do our little girls’ hair each morning…or to do it a little more special for a simcha, all on our own.
Here on BCP, we wanted to bring you more tips on styling our little girls’ hair so they stay neat all day.
So we turned to wedding hairstylist Rochella Feuer to teach us! And while we might never attempt the gorgeous hairstyles that she creates on a regular basis, we can at least learn some of the basics from an expert.
So, let’s get going. The results are going to be heaven!
Start by using a detangling spray like this one if needed and brushing the back.
Then, look for your child’s natural part. If her part is a drop off center, you can go with that, as long as it follows through to the back. Your daughter should look up when you’re making the top part.
Once you separate the hair at the part on the top, let your daughter look down (that will make it much easier for you to get this done right!)
and continue to separate all the way down to the bottom. It’s also easiest to make a part when hair is a drop wet.
You want a straight, straight line, no zig-zags or curves! You don’t want the part to be straight at the top, and then on an angle or diagonal in the back. The metal pick at the end of the salon comb is very helpful in helping to achieve that straight line. When you run it down the hair, it will help you separate the hair to two sides.
Once you have a straight and neat part, the rest is easy.
Make sure everything is neat and smooth. Use a comb to do this. Then, make the pony as low as possible. This keeps it neat. When it’s high, it’s more likely to get loose and messy.
Another key tip: Double the ponytail holders! Using two will also help the ponytails stay neat.
These are the best ponytail holders. They come in a bucket with 2,000 for $6 so you can just toss them daily.
If you want bows to stay in the hair, hairspray is your friend! Spray a drop before you put in the bows (in the area where the bow will be). When we asked Rochella which one she recommends, she told us she likes Tresemme 4.
You can use the spray in the front too to smooth out the baby hairs. Spray and tuck and it will stay neat; that’s especially helpful in the frizzy summer weather!
To make buns, just flip up the pony and use another double pony to secure it. Place the bow just above the bun. These are the bows used in the photos–it’s a 40 pack for just $10! This pretty pack of 40 bows were also recommended. There’s so many great neutral ones in there.
What if you have a toddler with really short hair? Bonus if it’s extra curly?
You can still make a neat hair style even if the hair is too short to pull into pigtails.
The trick is to make the part just in the front, then hold it and spray it down.
Then, put in the clips (start from the bottom and move it up, then clip). Like above, the spray will hold in the clips so they don’t slide out.
Now, even that curly head looks perfectly neat and adorable.

I keep a seam ripper in the bin with hair equipment for this purpose. Another one in the bathroom for bath time.

Any styles or tips for girls with thin hair? It’s so hard to keep it nice and neat looking (not scraggly…)
R F says
The first tip is to keep cutting the ends on your daughter’s hair every couple of weeks, that definitely helps the hair grow fuller and longer! Also no making tight ponytails straight from the bath ! (Its so much healthier for the hair to let it air dry loose)
And in regard to hairstyling, depending on how old she is I would think 2 buns is a perfect idea for a child with thinner hair!

My daughter hair is super thin but crazy curly it’s to thin to put in clips any ideas?
RF says
2 clips (one on each side of the part) is a great idea for curly heads with thin hair ! I find it to be the only style that actually stays and looks neat for a while ! Just make sure to spray the hair before you put the bow in so it doesn’t slip out!

Any ideas what to use for 2 year old, to hold his Bonnie’s in place? Hairspray for such a tiny kid? Or dippitty doe gell?

I haven’t used those clear plastic ponies since I ruined my oldest son’s hair with them. I found that making tight buns with them caused his front hair to start balding from the pulling. All the rest of my boys had messy hair til upsherin because I didn’t want that to happen again. Did nobody else experience that? Any other options? I have a girl now, so I can’t just say hang on til I chop it all off 🙂

Also, the bows were exactly what I was looking for, ty for linking! Great price even if you don’t use all the colors

The most important things to remember-
Firstly, please don’t make your child buns or ponies straight from the bath ! Also be sure to take out the pony holders before they go to sleep ! If you follow these recommendations I don’t think you should have any issues with hair loss
eg says
Thank you! I will try those tips

Yes I found buns and ponies on my little kids pull their hair out and cause balding also. I now gave my daughter an adorable little bob and my son I trimmed his bangs so they’re not in his eyes and let the rest loose till his upsherin. Maybe depends on genetics- the strength of the hair . In any case we love the short haircuts and they’re hair grows thick and beautiful from all the cutting
Ruchie says
What age range is this recommended for? Can I still pull it off on my 8 year old?
Mindy says
Depends where you live, look around at the other girls her age. But by Grade 1 it’s pretty much all straight part and pony,

I highly recommend the peony brand ponytails bought in local hosiery stores. They come in clear and black and pull out minimal hair when removing them. They’re not cheap though so don’t loose them 🙂
