You Can Dye Your Hair Yourself

Do you put it off because you can’t get to a salon? Dyeing your hair at home is easy and inexpensive.

Dyeing your roots at home is super quick, cheap, and easy! There’s no need to run to the salon when a quick dye job at home solves the problem.

There are many different box dye brands to choose from, and most of them are quite similar in price (organic ones may be a bit more expensive). Most box dye kits include gloves, developer, colorant, and a conditioner.

We suggest wearing an old sweatshirt so you don’t get any dye on your clothes, as well as using an old towel after you wash your hair as dye sometimes stays on your head.

Once you choose a dye color, you mix the two bottles (developer and colorant) and apply it to your roots as directed, washing off with the conditioner enclosed. Some kits come with a brush and some come with an applicator tip to apply the dye, making it easy to do yourself.

And that’s it!

Some Tips:

* Some brands don’t come with re-usable covers, so you have to use the full amount at once. Look for brands that do. If you just need to dye a small area, you use a small amount and the bottle will last for a few months.

* If the box doesn’t come with a brush, a new toothbrush designated for this purpose makes a GREAT brush to brush on the dye for small areas like the temples. It helps gets to all hairs.

* The smell can be strong. The ammonia-free dyes are much more tolerable and healthier.

* Put it on 15 minutes before you shower and then just rinse off inside the shower using a direct/removable shower head if you have. There’s really no mess if you do it right before showering.

* Use an oil-based makeup remover to remove any excess that remains stuck on the skin and it’ll come off easily.

Garnier Olia is Ammonia Free and works really well.

This post actually sepcifies that it is referring to dying roots. Some people like me start getting gray at a relatively young age in areas that show even wearing a tichel/snood, so I am really happy to learn i can save money by doing this at home. Thank you!

Designate an old snood to have handy in case you need to step out in middle of the process.

I find Clairol root touch up to be quite easy and it lasts pretty long. It includes everything you need. When I do my roots I do them horizontally that is imagine doing a headband at the front of your hair and then go a couple of inches back, that way if any hair creeps out it matches! It’s best to use your own gloves and not the clumsy ones that are included. Also put a little vaseline or aquaphor on the tips of your ears or other places that you don’t want the dye to get to and then just follow instructions.

Not a Rabbi but I am a Kallah teacher. I don’t recommend doing it the day before in case you didn’t wash it all out, but in general permanently, dyed hair is not a chatzitza. The color of the hair itself has been changed, there is nothing between the hair and the water. Many greying ladies like their hair to match their sheitels and just to feel good!

With the greatest respect, this is a genuine halachic question that should be addressed to your own LOR and not be paskened based off comments on a website 🙂

Thanks so much for these tips! A good friend of mine gave me another great tip! She said that using men’s beard dye she uses for her roots and temples and I tried it was amazing! Only 12.00 a box lasts a long time too! Also you can dye your eye brows if you have grays too!

Also make sure to wear a zip up/button-up top so you don’t have to pull anything over your head when you’re ready to shower/was your hair out.

Some companies make a foam dye which is much easier to apply if you’re doing it on yourself! It basically makes the dye come out in a foam rather then a liquid so it’s not so messy dripping all over the place.
