Keeping kids happy and getting some time for your own tefillah can be as simple as a new game for one.
While we all know that when our children are young, our primary focus on Yom Kippur will be taking care of our children. Sometimes it just takes a simple form of self-entertainment to get you an hour or more to daven. And quiet, portable entertainment means possibly even davening in shul.
Over the years, my family has enjoyed many different single player games. Long Friday nights or Shabbos afternoons, unwinding time after school, or even early mornings, there were so many times when one of these games kept a kid quietly happy. And Yom Kippur was usually when we’d get a new one. (I’m not talking about toddlers here – these are for preschoolers and up.)

Thanks for these amazing suggestions. I bought the coogam wooden heaxagon game and it was a huge hit. The link also gave another individual game suggestion called apple twist which I found very appropriate for rosh hashana. The kids love these games which they can play by themselves ( and no one calls them out for ‘cheating’) and which they have to use their thinking skills for. Thanks again for a great post!
