I love your new cookbook. It is amazing.
Unfortunately, the presentation of this promo video perpetuates the normalization of the erasure of women in media. I have contacted you regarding this issue before and you responded that “we chose not to show our faces due to the fact that we cherish our privacy and anonymity”. I respect that. You may have an understandable reason for not showing your faces, but people might get the impression from this video that there would be something wrong about you showing your faces.
The erasure of women in Jewish Media is a major problem and I hope you will take an opportunity to address it publicly and directly. Please continue to include women and girl’s faces in other posts and please make a conscious effort to ensure that they are represented at least equally in the photographs.

We hear you.
This video has brought in many comments regarding our choice not to put images or videos of ourselves out in public.
From the beginning of Between Carpools, as a team, we decided not to show our faces because we value our anonymity. Because we are not an individual woman running a brand who might need to use her picture to represent herself, we prefer to be able to go about our lives without instant recognition. We each have our own companies and are free to do with those platforms whatever we choose to do there with no judgement from fellow BCP team members.
We do not hide. We are not ashamed of who we are and what we do. We just don’t want to constantly be watched and followed in real life.
We fully support women in business and don’t believe in silencing or erasure. We share images of women on our site all the time. But if a woman wanted to advertise on our site without sharing her photo, we can support that, too. It’s a personal choice.
The reason we chose not to use a woman model in our video is because we did want to represent ourselves in our roles on the video, without actually showing our faces. And we accomplished that. But at a cost which we didn’t anticipate.
We realize that a message of erasure may come across to someone who is focused on seeing that message and fighting for a media change. It did not occur to us that this message would come out of our video because we have always been known to be fully on board with sharing photos of women – other than ourselves. We regret this impression.
Because our goal for Between Carpools is to be a safe and positive place for women to hang out online, we hope that we can respect each other’s opinions and move on.

You didn’t show your faces because you value your anonymity – but you showed the kid’s face. He’s not even old enough to give his consent. Why is it only the women’s anonymity that’s respected?

Well said ????????????????

Kudos Leah and the whole BCP team! Why do women need to be in social media? Why do they need to publicly show their faces and if they don’t they get backlash for “erasure”? Since when do our lives need to be so public and on display? What happened to keeping private but still having an impact? Something BCP can take such great pride in. The concept of “blessings come from keeping things quiet”.
Let’s try to remember the post BCP posted a while back of being kind in your comments.

So true! It’s so refreshing to see that in 2020, you can be a successful frum woman while still being sensitive to our values.

I love and second this response! Great chizuk to be true to our values! BCP also feels so relatable and personal, I think if there were faces behind it, it would feel more about “YOU GUYS” than it does about us…
keep up the amazing work!

Honestly I dont blame them for not wanting to be posted online ! They want to live normal lives like the rest of us and not always be recognized! Kudos to you for doing it your way!

Beautiful video. Kudos for your work ????. I see in your comment that people are bashing you, well – it’s YOUR site and you do whatever YOU want!
Btw, if Jewish women are running by themselves this site – as you can see in the video, well that’s not erasing women… ????, Looks like someone has an agenda here – or perhaps they can’t stand that your book was #1 bestseller in Amazon cookbooks when I ordered it ????.

Wow! I love checking out your website and use so many of your ideas and recipes. To the person who made the comment about not putting their faces in- i feel very sorry for you. Its so sad that you feel that women need to have their faces on display to feel worthy. Its actually the opposite that is true. I feel like we all value the BCP team so much more BECAUSE they respect their own privacy. Its like they are letting us have a little peek into their private lives so we know their ideas, recipes and anecdotes are REAL versus the other ppl on social media who are just putting up a big show!
Lets not forget what we all were taught from when were young girls in school “Kol Kevudah Bas Melech Penima”-the glory of a woman is in staying OUT of the public eye.
To the BCP team keep up your great work! There are hundreds of bloggers and websites out there but there is not any that took off so well for our community. Its your keeping to your values that made you so successful!! Keep your face off your website so that you can hold your head up high:)

I Just watched the video. It is a huge kiddush Hashem that they did not have their faces put in. I feel proud to be part of this nation!!
I just bought the cookbook and so excited to try some recipes!

Is this how we teach our kids to act? To push away any food they don’t like and act like spoiled brats?
Rachel says
Telling someone you HAVE to show your face publicly, doesn’t show that you respect women-you are forcing then to do what YOU want, and not respecting their choice! I applaud the team for sticking to their values and showing us that you can successfully run a business on a tzniusdik platform. I enjoy the site, and the cookbook. However, I was disappointed in the video, by the boy pushing away his food! I get that this is a dramatization, but in my house we teach the kids to say, no thank you. B’hatzlocha!
