Whether it’s your first baby or you’ve done this multiple times,
it’s hard to remember all the little things a baby needs.
Babies need a lot of things. And whether you’re planning ahead or scrambling to get it all together from your hospital bed, it really helps to have a handy checklist. This list includes all the things you’ll need when you come home with the newest member of the family.
Clothing and Layette:
- 8 newborn footies
- 8 onesies/undershirts
- 3-4 hats (at least 2 should be pull-on hats for sleeping because babies sleep a lot!)
- 1-2 warm blankets
- 3-5 swaddle blankets
- 6-12 burp cloths
- 2-3 pacis (or more) and a clip if you like to always find the paci
- Baby boys: bris outfit
- 6 bibs
- 2 bath towels
- Washcloths
- Outerwear: depends on season
Other:
- Baby soap/shampoo / baby lotion
- Baby bath
- Car seat with base or Doona
- Winter: Car seat bunting
- Bassinet or porta crib and 2-3 sheets with a mattress protector
- Baby monitor if you have a nurse or your baby is sleeping in a separate room
- Alcohol and gauze to use until the cord falls off (extra for baby boys for after the bris)
- Newborn diapers (Best to go with a reliable brand like Pampers Swaddlers for newborns as their skin is sensitive)
- Baby wipes
- Bottles
- Bottle brush
- Pump (if nursing)
- Formula (if using)

It’s not recommended to apply anything to the cord, just wait until it falls off by itself.
