How To Avoid the Coat Mix-ups

With so many people wearing similar coats, there’s always someone taking the wrong one and leaving his coat behind.

Whether is a “shayne coat” type of raincoat, a black wool coat, or a TO fur-lined hoodie, so many of our guys wear the same outerwear. And how often does it get swapped?

I got this simple idea from my neighbor and I think it’s genius!

adding duck tape to a coat loop

She adds a bright colored piece of duct tape to the coat loop of each jacket or coat. When her husband is reaching for his on the shul hooks, he knows at a glance which is his. And the same for those tweens who all wear the same jackets or hoodies to school. It’s less likely for a kid to take a jacket that has a color on it that he doesn’t recognize.

If you have multiple boys wearing the same type of outerwear, maybe get each one their own color and it’ll work well for your house, too.

I write the name and phone number on a black coat lining with whiteout polish. Stays put and doesn’t rub out ever!

guys dont check the name on the lining. they just grab whatever looks remotely similar to their own lol. this hack is so visual that (most) guys will notice it and not take it home from shul/ school if its not their own

What a great idea! Many MANY years ago, when all little yeshiva boys had the identical navy coat (was it Little Lamb?) my friend went to pick up her son from yeshiva early. She searched through 30 identical coats looking for the one with her name on the label. Couldn’t find one. Went through 30 identical coats again. Still couldn’t find a label with her name on it. Then finally remembered to look for one with MY last name on the label… Those coats wore like iron. Went through my 3 boys, then down to her 3 boys. A piece of colored duct tape would have made a HUGE difference!

Love this idea for my coat closet!
We have hooks with a bunch of black coats… They look identical when you’re rushing out.

This is brilliant! After telling my son about the idea, he thought of putting tape on his hangers in the yeshiva dorm as there is a shared closet…and all those white shirts and black jackets….

My son bought a bright color nail polish and painted all his hangers, so it is easy to grab and go.
