How to Make a Hamantaschen Shaped Challah

It’s so easy to make a hamantaschen shaped challah, and the results are so pretty!

Many years ago, we featured this Challah-Taschen on Between Carpools. It was a triangle shaped challah with surprise fillings inside.

Soon after, Batsheva Jungreis was in touch with us about a similar idea that she had made. We loved the idea, but Purim had already past, so we tucked it away for another time.

We’re not sure why it didn’t resurface until we began reviewing our Purim ideas before this year’s season. And the Hamantaschen-Shaped challah was still sitting there–why hadn’t we tried to make it all this time? Somehow, the idea had gotten lost and then resurfaced!

It’s actually really clever and we’re so glad we finally tried it!

Unlike the Challah-Taschen, this version is your regular challah, just in a new shape. We used the Essential Challah recipe that’s here on BCP. Make your dough as you normally would.

Divide your challah dough into five. You’ll need 1/5th for each challah if you’re using the larger 10-inch sized tube pan.

Cutting a piece of challah dough in half.

Separate your piece of dough in half.

Rolling one piece (each half) of challah dough into a long strand.

Roll each piece into long strands.

Twisting two long strands of challah dough to create one long twist.

You’ll need to create one long twist like this for each challah.

So simple! It’s much easier than making traditional challah!

Bending in the sides of a 10" aluminum foil tube pan so that you have a triangle.

This challah bakes in a disposable tube pan. Prepare it by bending in the sides so that you have a triangle.

That was easy!

You can also make smaller challahs instead using the smaller sized 8-inch tube pan.

Spray your pan,

and simply wrap your challah twist around the tube.

Brushing the challah twists - made by twisting two longs strands of challah dough - wrapped around the tube of an 8" and 10" aluminum foil tube pan with its sides bent in to resemble triangles - with egg.

Egg it, let it rise, and bake as normal.

The results are so pretty!

You can also use the center for a dip bowl if desired.
