Fruity No Sugar Added Pre-Fast Sports Drink

Ok, so this isn’t exactly a sports drink…then you’d have all the sugars in there.

It’s pretty much just a ‘doctored up’ cup of coconut water. But I couldn’t put that in the title in case you’re like me and have an aversion to plain coconut water.

Now hear me out, what if I told you, you could have all the benefits of coconut water, as per Google (disclaimer, I’m not a nutritionist):

–   Electrolytes (potassium, sodium, and magnesium) – keeps you hydrated, skin health

Antioxidants – protects cells from damage

–   Vitamin C – supports immune system & collagen production

–   Natural enzymes and fiber – aids in digestion

AND you could (almost) avoid that oddly sweet, yet bland at the same time coconut water flavor. I think you’d start checking if Amazon delivers.

So, go ahead and follow the simple steps below to make yourself the lowest sugar, electrolyte-filled sports drink that should help you feel hydrated before this upcoming fast day. Plus, bonus for the nursing mamas, they say it helps in milk production.

tea concentrate in a glass

First, you’ll simply make a concentrated tea with 5 bags.

Pour your coconut water into your glass.

adding tea concentrate to a glass with coconut water and ice

Once the tea has cooled, add it to your coconut water along with some ice!

Here’s some notes.

–   I enjoy it as is because of the inherent sweetness in the coconut water, but if you prefer a sweeter beverage, feel free to add your sweetener of choice (honey, agave etc.)

–   Also, feel free to play around with the ratios to suit your taste. I’ve become more used to the coconut water flavor and use less tea essence, but you may prefer to start with more.

I absolutely cannot stand the smell or taste of coconuts! But I need a good pre-fast drink to help me get through the fast (nervous nursing mama here!). Does this taste like coconuts once the tea is mixed in? Like even slightly?

This is amazing!! So helpful! I hated coconut water when I have tried it before. This worked 100%. I gulped it down.

    Thanks so much!

Actually the specific brand of coconut water you use din your pictures has added sugar and gums. Coconut water shouldn’t have anything added to it. It should be 100% pure coconut water listed in the ingredients

I’m very interested in trying this recipe, especially since I’ve been experimenting a significant Menieres Disease flare-up for about 6 months, and there is some research suggesting that balancing potassium and sodium levels may reduce symptoms for some sufferers. Unfortunately, most of us are also required to avoid caffeine since it is a known trigger…. Have you had any success finding a good substitution for the tea (besides possibly caffeine free)? Coconut water is definitely an acquired taste, so this recipe absolutely has promise!!

This tea is caffeine free, but you can try mixing any fruit juice to mask the taste. It doesn’t need a lot – I sometimes mix about 1/4 cup of 100% cold pressed fruit juice with the coconut water and it’s great.
