It might be a tool you bring out only on Thursday nights (unless you love meat pizzas too), but a good pizza slicer can make the task easier than others.
We have lots of pizza recipes on Between Carpools. There’s versions of cheese pizza, healthier versions like Spelt Dough Pizza, and lots of different meat pizzas, including our latest favorites, the Meat Pizza with Pastrami and Facon or this Corned Beef Pizza. And whether you prefer the classic versions, the meat versions, or both, a pizza wheel or two will make your pizza nights, whether they’re milchigs or fleishigs, all the easier.
Trying to slice a pizza can get quite messy if you try to use a knife. It just doesn’t work.
And so, we asked our readers for recommendations of their favorite pizza slicers–not just different brands of pizza wheels, but there’s also different types of slicers altogether. You sent us lots of links. And then, we ordered the ones that got the most votes.
Now it was time to test! We also ordered a large pizza pie and a personal pie (from a NY-style pizza shop) and got to work!
OXO Good Grips Small Pizza Wheel
PROS: We tested the small 3.5-inch version of this pizza wheel; perhaps it’s easier to handle/manage vs. the large 4-inch version for a woman’s hands. That’s a bonus. With the OXO, the grip is the most comfortable and the slice is the smoothest. It’s also very reasonably priced, making it our overall #1 pick.
KitchenAid Classic Pizza Wheel
PROS: This was a reader favorite, and we understand why, as it’s a solid good choice. It doesn’t have the comfort grip that’s signature OXO, but it’s still comfortable to hold and you do feel the super sturdy KitchenAid quality that you’d expect. Plus, it’s pretty. Another bonus: It comes in three different colors, so you can easily differentiate between your dairy and meat slicers.
PROS: We felt that the Zyliss was the safest to use, as most of the blade is covered. This had been a previous favorite, and it does slice really well, including really thick crust. CONS: The cover does make it more bulky, which you might not like if you’re short on drawer space. The plastic can also crack if it’s dropped.
We admit it, we had no idea pizza scissors was a thing. We thought it was something gimmicky and never really thought to try it as an alternative to a wheel. But boy, we learned that a lot of you love your scissors! It’s actually really easy to cut a slice of pizza into small pieces using a scissor. It doesn’t feel as authentic but it’s fun to use and does a great cutting job.
The Asdirne version we tested splits into two pieces for easy cleaning in the dishwasher and doesn’t take up too much space in the drawer. The cuts are really smooth and it’s well-priced. We really liked using it! CONS: It’s annoying to have to put it back together after cleaning.
This one also came highly recommended by some pizza enthusiast readers. While it does cut nicely, the Asdirne won us over for a few reasons. One, price. The DreamFarm is much more expensive and we’re not sure why. Two, we’re not fans of kitchen tools with springs–we’re a bit concerned that it can break. Three, this is larger than the Asdirne, so it will need more devoted drawer space.
Just for the fun of it, we’re sharing our thoughts on the Pizza Rocker. There are many brands that make a Pizza Rocker, but we already owned this one, so we included it in our pizza slicer reviews. PROS: You feel like you are running a gourmet pizzeria as you slice, as it cuts an entire personal pie in one motion. CONS: It doesn’t work well, for large pies, and it’s heavy and hard to drag across a whole large pie. We don’t like taking it out to, let’s say, slice up a slice of pizza into smaller pieces for a child. For that, we’d turn to one of our wheels or the scissor.
