Love cooking with fresh garlic? We’ve got a tip that will eliminate the messy garlic press from your dinner prep.
While we love the convenience of frozen crushed garlic cubes, they don’t really measure up to freshly minced garlic prepared at home. And many of us are already buying the peeled garlic cloves at local grocery stores (or in bulk at Costco). But who likes cleaning out the garlic press every time they cook??
And while you may not need this on a regular basis, before a Yom Tov cooking marathon, the efficiency can make a real difference.
And it’s really easy!

Transfer the chopped garlic to a glass jar and mix in some salt. Then top the jar with olive oil,
so that there is a thin layer on top of the garlic. This oil layer will help avoid spoiling. Cover tightly and store in the fridge for up to a week. That’s all there is to it!
Know that a Costco size bag yields a LOT of crushed garlic. Share some with a neighbor if you don’t use that much garlic in a week. (Note: We confirmed with a posek that as long as the garlic is combined with salt and oil, it is acceptable to store it overnight.)

Add some oil while processing it- blends nicer that way also, then, divide the crushed garlic in sandwich size ziplock bags, lay flat and stack a few filled bags on each other. Then, FREEZE them. Every time you need some crushed garlic, crack off a little bit and put rest in the freezer… It has lasted me for many many months at a time. ITS A GAME CHANGER!!! So excited the secret is out! Was so happy to see this idea spread to the world:)

Me too! I put in the small salad dressing containers in the freezer and it lasts for a while. Game changer in general, especially before y”t.
I keep the Costco bag of garlic in the freezer and it takes a second to defrost before chopping or crushing… I usually don’t even wait and crush it frozen… that bag can really last me in the freezer
How much is a clove of garlic? a spoonful?
approximately 1 teaspoon of chopped garlic or 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic
You can also freeze it in silicone ice cube trays. Super easy to pop out and saves a lot of time and money. I do this with many small condiment type things like pesto, etc.

The easiest way to peel garlic cloves is to place the separated cloves on a silicone mat, fold some over it, and rub them together. The skin will come off really quickly! MAJOR GAME CHANGER!!
