The Fresh Watermelon Hack

Day old cut watermelon usually gets soggy. This trick keeps it crisp.

It’s tempting to buy that pre-cut fruit. We admit, we turn to the pre-chopped versions when preparing this fruit salad.

And while it may be a great last minute solution, when we need lots and lots of watermelon to refresh the whole family or a crowd on these summer days, you know you’re going to need to get out your cutting board and knife and break down that watermelon.

In the past, we’ve featured tips for cutting those perfect squares. See the technique for Cutting a Whole Watermelon into perfect cubes here, or another method for cutting a watermelon quarter or mangos here.

But what about when you need to cut a watermelon in advance? Often, we never get to cutting that melon up because it needs to be fresh. We all know that pre-cut fruit does not last very long.

Reader SB Benattar shared this tip. If you put the cut-up watermelon in a strainer set over a bowl, it will keep the juice away.

The watermelon stays crisp and doesn’t get soggy.

Amazing simple idea! I don’t think this can be done on Shabbos though – putting the fruit into a colander or strainer.

Aldi sells and amazing container that has a built in strainer. I think it’s made by crouton.

Do they make a big size container ?
looks like only a bit of the watermelon would fit in there.

Before I put the cut up watermelon into the container, I lay down a layer of the watermelon’s own white part of the rind. This keeps it an extra 2 days!
