A Tiny Red Onion Hack

What do you do with a whole red onion when you only need a little bit? These are two “just a little bit of red onion” solutions.

A little bit of red onion goes a long way in a lot of dishes. In the past, we showed you a cute hack for getting that really tiny dice you want for your guacamole here.

But it’s some finely diced red onion like you see in a longtime fav Corn Feta Salad in or some thinly sliced red onion like in our new favorite Cauliflower Chickpea Salad (slice it the way you like it) or when you simply want to add some to your own personal salad, most often, you only use a portion of the onion.

One reader shared this brilliant idea. She loves adding a little fresh red onion to dishes. For a salad. For on top of avocado toast. Or any other place where red onion just finishes that dish.

After one Yom Tov, after serving a side dish that included pearl red onions, she had some of those cute little onions leftover and put them in her onion basket.

She said, “I found myself reaching for one whenever I needed just that tiny tang of red onion. It was perfect! Not only do they last for weeks, but the 1-inch balls give me the perfect amount of onion, and they are just that much cuter when cut into little rings. I buy them all the time now.”

What have the rest of us been doing until now after preparing all those recipes that only call for ½ of a red onion?

The Gemara says that it is dangerous to eat raw peeled onion that was left overnight, even if it was left in sealed packaging. The exception is that if the peel or root is left on. It rarely comes up with regular onions because we’re always dicing and cooking the whole thing, but with red onions, it comes up all the time.

So, when we need just a portion of an onion, we slice off that portion, leaving the root intact as you see here.

When you store the onion in the fridge, make sure to remember or mark down on the packaging whether you used a dairy, meat, or pareve knife so you know the status of your leftover red onion.

There you have it–two ways to enjoy just a bit of red onion. Or you can just make a batch of Pickled Red Onions with the rest!

My Rav strongly discourages saving onions cut with a milchig or fleishig knife. Not every family member will notice the fleishig or milchig marking. Best practice is to always use a pareve knife when cutting an onion or other shap foods. If you accidentally used a fleishig or milchig knife, throw the remainder of the onion out to avoid complicated shailos.

Yes. I do the same. Pareve knife only for red onions.

Pareve knife only for all onions, and even all vegetables. If that habit gets ingrained, there’s no remembering to davka use a pareve knife for onions, and you never run into any kashrus problems. That’s what I (tried) to teach my daughters – not asking if they do it in their own homes now lol!

Can you explain what you do exactly? Ive tried this in the past and never noticed anything on it so I would imagine I’m doing something incorrectly.

This is a famous myth. but there’s no basis at all for it. So sorry. Your child is getting better BH just like they would have gotten better without an onion in their room. Hashem created an amazing immune system where the body fights viruses and infections by itself and when you get a cold, you feel ill and then you feel better. That’s why you think the onion is ‘working’, but there’s no cause and effect there. Use your onions for a delicious onion soup instead 🙂 feel good!

Just to add my own experience…. I had a terrible cough that made it impossible for me to sleep through the night, when my sister told me to cut up an onion and leave it in a bowl near my pillow.
That night I did, indeed, sleep through the night b’chasdei Hashem! I did not see any spot on the onion.
Hashem put fabulous resources into creation for us and this is one of them.

I like to chop a whole big red onion into tiny pieces and add salt and keep in the fridge so I can quickly grab some each time I want to add it to things

Not sure if it’s only Sephardic minhag but we put salt on all sharp foods before saving overnight . Onions , garlic and lemon all need to have a bit of salt on them after cut open .

Hi @Tehilla, this actually works! try it yourself, Hashem has putten in strong natural remedies in the things around us for our benefit! believe it or not onions take in germs and keep them inside them! my kids go to sleep with a stuffy nose and heavy cough and they wake up much much better after that night…
i don’t always do so, but when i do i BH see strong results with Hashems help.

Keeping the peel on this way might be a problem regarding bugs crawling in from the outer layers into the onion.

I use regular pearl onion for eggs with onion shabbos day, following our minhag to eat the eggs with onion. So convenient! Learned from a friend!

I choptgem in a food processor and mix in s little oil and salt. Then put in a silicone cube section like ice tray. Store in the freezer and pop out when needed. Bigger cubes than those store bought frozen garlic cubes and easier to pop out. The salt and drop of oil solves the tumah problem.

    Parve Knife Hack
I store my parve knives in a soft pencil case that I keep in high shelf.
I immediately put it back after use.
Solved a lot of Shalom Bayis conversations………….
