How Much Sleep Do My Kids Need? How Much Sleep Do I Need?

Is it time to do away with your toddler’s mid-afternoon nap? How should it affect her bedtime and how much sleep does she really need?

Your child is battling for a later bedtime. Sure, he’s had the same bedtime since he was 5, but is it the right time to give him that extra hour? Here’s recommended sleep time ranges for every stage.

Newborn (0-3 months)

14-17 hours needed; some hold there is no recommendation (the baby will naturally sleep the amount of time he/she needs)

Infant (4-12 months)

12-16 hours per 24 hours (including naps)

Toddler (1-2 years)

11-14 hours per 24 hours (including naps)

Preschool (3-5 years)

10-13 hours per 24 hours (including naps)

School Age (6-12 years)

9-12 hours per 24 hours

Teen  (13-18 years)

8-10 hours per 24 hours

Adult (18-60 years)

7 or more hours per night

61-64

7-9 hours

65+

7-8 hours

Always keep in mind that some kids need more or less. Anything within 1-2 hours of this range may be appropriate.
