How to Shorten Those Long Backpack Straps

Your child chose the perfect backpack for back to school, but the straps are hanging down to her knees!

There’s no excitement like a new backpack for a brand new school year. Choosing just the right one is a thrill when you’re in elementary school.

Load up all those school supplies, put it on the child’s back, adjust the strap – it’s all just right. If only those straps were not so long. We have a simple fix.

If you just cut the strap, it’ll fray in days. But really all that cut needs is to be sealed. Most straps are made from nylon, which melts when you hold fire to it. If your backpack has nylon straps, grab a lighter or a match and hold it next to the edge of the strap for a couple of seconds and you’re good to go! The nylon will melt and create a hard edge that won’t fray. Much better!
