Sometimes, the little tricks that are obvious to one person might be so helpful to another…like this hot plate technique.
Many of the “hacks” we share on Between Carpools are things people do for years and don’t realize that it may be something others don’t know about. Posts that include tips on labeling your baking sheets, keeping your guest room ready at all times, keeping your vases dust free, and keeping food in 9×13 inch pans fresh in the freezer are all hacks that you may never have heard of OR that you do all the time. And so we continue to share these simple things for those that didn’t hear of them. Like this hot plate one.

You can also use this rack when preparing the best Facon/beef fry ever.
NOTE: Due to feedback from our readers about the danger of covering a hot plate completely with aluminum, we’ve updated our photo.
Let us know what you think about these simple hacks in the comments below.

I was once told not to cover my hot plate with silver foil because it can cause over heating.. so just bear that in mind when using this tip!

I also heard that the fire Dept said not to put aluminum foil on a hot plate because he makes it extremely hot. But the cookie sheet idea is brilliant!!!

The hot plates themselves say not to cover. I would remove this picture from the site.

Please remove the idea of putting silver foil on hot plate
It is very dangerous! Another idea is to put a timer to shut off the hot plate once you are done using it.

Nice used post! I didn’t know covering the hotplate with foil was a hazard. What do you use to catch the spills and keep the hotplate clean?

Wow. This rack idea is genius. Why did I only see it now? . I used cupcake pan. It circulate the heat or something. But this makes so much more sense. I would use the rack from my convection oven. And about covering the hot plate. I don’t think putting on a rack is considered covering like with foil. Rack lets heat circulate. And of course timers
