Cutting fruit might be simple, but it’s just those simple techniques that stick with us the longest.
Back when we showed you this cutting board hack, a couple of you asked for instructions on cutting the mango shown in the photos. I didn’t think at the time that I was cutting the fruit in any particularly special way, but since you asked…we listened. ( And while we were at it, we cut a watermelon the easiest way we know how to as well).
While most of us know how to cut a watermelon, we’ve had moments in our lives when we were newlyweds and had sister-in-laws laugh at us while trying ineptly to cut that monstrous melon. I remember my own moment very clearly.
So, this one’s for you.
I learned this hack when watching the cook while working in the kitchen of a local day camp. In order to easily cut your watermelon into quarters, cut a thin slice off both ends of the watermelon, lengthwise, stand the watermelon up, and using a long knife, cut across the length of the watermelon, first in half and then those halves into quarters. Enjoy!
Great tip, thanks!
I find it easier to peel the mango first with a peeler and then slice as you showed in the post.
Best hack I learned a few years ago for mangoes — cut each “cheek” off the seed, then peel the cheeks by pushing them along the rim of a tall drinking glass. The peel slides off and the mango flesh slides into the glass for less mess!
thanks so much for the tutorial. can we get one for avocado? and how to do these fancy avocado roses? and while were on the topic of avocado a tip on keeping the avocado fresh and green?
Shaindy, we do have this post!
