Frothy Whipped Coffee

This coffee is a hype that is here to stay.

Trends come and go. Some go viral for a bit, and then disappear. And some have staying power.

Like whipped coffee–it looks amazing, and guess what, it tastes amazing too.

It’s not just hype.

Summer is the perfect time to have fun with your cup of coffee, this drink feels just as indulging (if not more) as the ones you order in a cafe (and pay $12 or more for).

With just a few ingredients, you can make yourself something so surprisingly delicious.

And guess what:

You can prepare it once and enjoy it all week.

Yes, even on Shabbos (think shalosh seudos!) Simply freeze the “batter” and scoop it out as needed.

You will start by blending together the sugar, instant coffee and hot water.

We used a hand mixer, it works perfectly for the job. A standing mixer with the whisk attachment would work well too, but it felt silly to pull that out for this. We also read that some people use the food processor with the s-blade. So we assume that should work as well.

We know you will ask, “Does an immersion blender work too?” The answer is we do not know. We haven’t tried it. Let us know in comments if you do.

You want to blend it long enough so that it lightens in color significantly and reaches the consistency of a cake batter or even marshmallow fluff.

Thick and creamy, with ripples showing. This will take time. How long? Approximately 5 minutes, which is a loooong time when blending something. So keep going, don’t give up too soon.

This is why we call it “whipped” coffee. (Because it takes some time, that’s why we’re making a big batch…so we can use it all week long.)

Once you have a thick batter that can be scooped up onto a spoon like marshmallow fluff, you are ready to prepare your cup of delicious cold coffee.

At this point, you can either prepare yourself a cup, or freeze the batter as-is for future use.

To prepare the coffee:

Place some ice in a cup.

We used these cute ice balls because we enjoy Between Carpools tips too! We like to have little fancy ice balls in our freezer because they make our drinks feel special even though…they’re still just ice.

Add milk halfway up the cup. Use any milk that you like, whether from a cow, a plant or a nut, we do not discriminate.

Top with a GENEROUS dollop of whipped coffee and add a straw.

Wait a few minutes and stir gently to mix the flavors.

Enjoy!

If preparing this drink with the frozen batter, the method is the same, simply scoop some batter up and use as directed.

Whipped Coffee

Ingredients

  • ½ cup instant coffee (any variety or brand will work)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup hot water

To Prepare a Cup of Coffee:

  • ice
  • milk of choice
  • whipped coffee

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients in a bowl.
  • Using a hand mixer (or a standing mixer with the whisk attachment), whip until the mixture changes in color to a light taupe color and becomes thick like a batter. You are looking for a consistency like marshmallow fluff. This will take a long time, about 5 minutes on high speed. You can freeze the batter at this point for later use, or proceed to make the coffee.
  • To prepare your cup of coffee, place ice halfway up a glass. Add milk to cover the ice. Top with a generous amount of whipped coffee and let sit for 2-3 minutes before serving. Stir gently to mix the flavors.

This works with an immersion blender. I’ve done it, but not in such a large amount. I prepared a single serving directly in a cup and then added milk after blending it.

Stick blender worked fine, but its not comfortable to hold the button the whole time. I usually just use one whisk on my hand mixer in a 2 lb container. Keeps the mess contained, and no need to transfer to a different container to store.

Does the frozen “batter” have the consistency of coffee ice cream? My kids really want to try it as an ice cream. 🙂

The whip itself is intensely flavored, but so yummy. Any ideas for a dessert using just the whip? (Especially since it freezes so well)

Will The whipped coffee get whipped if i use coconut sugar?
Also, what do you think of the idea, to make this dessert for Friday night, with hot water and oat milk, then add the froth on top??
    Worth giving a try?
