Basics: Simple Syrup

The liquified version of sugar is super easy to make and comes in handy in so many recipes.

We use simple syrup in a lot of recipes, especially over Pesach. If it’s not something you’re accustomed to making, no worries, simple syrup is, as the name suggests…completely simple.

Making simple syrup simply involves boiling sugar and water together to make a liquified version of sugar.

It comes in really handy, and it’s shelf stable, so you can make some and then use it as needed.

Simple syrup made it so much easier for us to caramelize the nuts in this gorgeous Chicken Salad (no need to worry about burning sugar on the stovetop…and then rushing to coat the nuts!). Such a great technique!

Last year, we used simple syrup to make great mango and strawberry sorbet for the cutest fruit pops. And, of course, you need simple syrup to make Lemonade!

Simple syrup is also a great recipe replacement if you don’t use honey or maple syrup and need a liquid sweetener, as we suggest using in our Pesach Granola. It also does a great job sweetening coffee, as it’s already dissolved.

During the year, we’ve used simple syrup in Cocktails and drizzled on top of this Knafeh Dessert.

Let cool and store in a jar, or use a funnel if you’d like to store it in a squeeze bottle for convenience.

U can skip the pot and mix sugar with boiling water, stirring until dissolved.

Using cold simple syrup in sorbet recipes will give you the creamiest, most delicious sorbet texture!! TRY IT!! (I learned this a few years ago from @homegrownkosher)

FYI, it is generally recommended that simple syrup be stored in the refrigerator if you want to keep it for more than just a few days, as it can develop bacteria pretty quickly.

A even easier way to make it.
Add sugar to the squeeze bottle then add equal amount of boiling water cover gently while holing the lid on tightly turn the bottle a few times let it sit on the counter till the sugar dissolves.
If you keep it in the fridge it lasts for months.
