Kosherwine.com visited and tasted their way through the small, boutique wineries scattered all over Israel to bring the best small-batch wine to market.
Those of you who love wine already know all the big brands and even some of the boutique wineries that rose to prominence over the last few years. But there are also smaller, kosher micro-wineries that produce less than 10,000 bottles a year–too little for traditional importers. Referred to as Garage Wineries, these boutique wine labs produce some of the best wines found in the country. Here you’ll find varietal blends you’re not likely to taste anywhere else. The wines are handcrafted under the care of individual winemakers who can give special attention to every grapevine, every tank, every barrel, and even down to the last bottle.
In 2017, David Perelman, CEO, and Dovid Riven, Executive VP, of KosherWine.com, went to Israel with a specific goal – discover the best garage wineries and bring them to market. They visited the wineries around Israel, met with winemakers, heard their unique stories, and sampled their wines. “We spent six months planning and coordinating this trip and ultimately visited over 40 wineries in a span of 10 days,” says Dovid Riven.
After tasting all these wines, David and Dovid picked 17 varieties from their top 5 Israeli garage wineries: Shiran, Gito, Amos, Herzberg, and Nevo. These wineries have their wines sold exclusively on Kosherwine.com now.
Riven says: “We are very excited to introduce these wines to our customers. Finding under-the-radar winemakers and bringing their wines to the US audience has been a special process.”
Usually, wine produced by these small wineries can’t be imported because they can’t produce enough for importers to supply their stores. “Our focus on selling direct to consumer enables us to curate smaller quantities. We were able to kickstart this venture successfully, and we will continue to find more wines with outstanding quality to offer our customers.”
